I think we've (that is, Noel, Rich, and myself) have proven that it's  
pretty easy to build SWIG support for Python, Ruby, and Java, around  
a C/C++ library.

So this is certainly possible, although it ignores the rather  
significant work to port code like the SDG into C++. Still, I suspect  
this will have to happen in the Open Babel project sometime soon  
anyway. Folks like Tim Vandermeersch have been very kind to add nice  
force field code.
