More seriously, not all Linux distributions are interoperable, and getting the
right combination of compilers and libraries can be tricky, so there can be
reasons for this.
As an example, if you're doing training you can come in with a preconfigured
environment instead of having to figure out what's on the machines at the site.
And the students can come back with their working environment on a USB stick.
