Salvatore Mele is a great supporter of Openness and is spearheading the
effort to Open high Energy physics. He's asking for people to fill in an
Open Access survey. I know BO is not OA, and I have warned him that he won't
get many mainstream chemists responding, but you might like to spread this
to other lists

Thanks

P.

Subject: Open Access attitudes (in chemistry)
To: Peter Murray-Rust <[email protected]>

Dear Peter,

long time no seen and I hope we'll cross paths again sometime soon. Among
(too) many things, I've been co-ordinating an European Project to try and
understand where's the gap (money? understanding? logic?) between what's on
offer in Open Access journals and what's *really* needed by scientists.

We're almost done with the offer, but to asses the needs, instead of
hearsay, we're going the old-fashioned "collect data, lots of that, and
representative, and then analyse it". It might sound new in some quarters.
We've a questionnaire up at http://surveymonkey.com/soap_survey_d to this
target. The good news is that we've got (through publishers mailing lists)
40k answers to the questionnaire across all possible fields of science and
the humanities. The bad news is that published scientists in chemistry seem
to be under-represented in this sample (or at least, we got more people
publishing in Education or Psychology) than chemistry. I think the
discipline (together with a few more hard sciences) would benefit from a
larger representation and I was wondering if you would have access to a few
mailing lists where you could help us spread the voice. The survey data will
be eventually public, so that anyone involved into publishing and/or the OA
debate can mine them and make up their own opinion.

I hope you'll be able to help.

Salvatore

P.S. I'm appending a text we've used to make some publicity so far.

Your views on open access publishing are needed!

The SOAP Project (*), funded by the European Commission, would like to
announce the release of an online survey to assess researchers' experiences
with open access publishing. This survey aims to inform the most
comprehensive analysis of attitudes to open access publishing to date and is
seeking views from a wide a range of interested parties. It is primarily
aimed at active researchers in public and private organizations, from all
research fields in science and the humanities and focuses on publication of
research articles in (open access) peer-reviewed journals.

If you would like to contribute to shaping the public discourse on open
access, please visit http://surveymonkey.com/soap_survey_d. It should take
10-15 minutes to complete. We would appreciate if you would share this link
with your colleagues and collaborators, so that the views of your discipline
are properly represented.

The survey outcome will be made public and the resulting insights as well as
recommendations will be openly shared with the European Commission,
publishers, research funding agencies, libraries and researchers.

Thanks in advance, the SOAP Project Team [email protected]

(*) Note: The SOAP consortium is coordinated by CERN, the European
Organization for Nuclear Research. It represents key stakeholders in open
access, such as publishers BioMed Central, SAGE and Springer; funding
agencies (the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council) and libraries
(the Max Planck Digital Library of the Max Planck Society). The project runs
for two years, from March 2009 to February 2011.
