The previously referenced sdk is pretty much your best bet, unless the community has revamped things significantly since Sun Cobalt placed it into maintenance mode.
The team actually wrote a pretty slick way of modifying the ui, considering the tools available at the time. Its a couple of lines of code and a few files to make the most of the changes you requested. I think I genned up a whole new section (the portscan and segv detectors for the raq550) in about 4 hours once I knew where the peices went.
