Rebooting the VPS appears to solve the issue.
Yeah, a reboot will solve the issue if the symlink from /var/run to /run
is still in place.
The update was pretty massive and it included both a Systemd as well as
a Sendmail update. I think the Systemd update itself is the most
problematic part as we started to get "policytoolkit violations" after
the update which almost always make a reboot necessary.
FWIW, one of my 5209 where mrtg is installed got also the /var/lock/mrtg
directory "cleaned away" with this recent update.
