frank & others, I just want to clarify something about compress.rb. You do NOT need RoR (Ruby on Rails) to run compress.rb. You only need Ruby. Ruby is a programming language that has been around for longer than Rails. It's like the difference between PHP & CakePHP, Python & Django, etc. It's very easy to install support for languages like Python & Ruby on any operating system, because they are just scripting languages. In order to get compress.rb running on your computer, again, you do NOT need RoR, or even Apache, MySQL, etc. You just need Ruby.
