Isn't it just that the page grows longer, and therefore the browser adds a
scrollbar, thus narrowing the page?

As an aside, it might not be necessary loading the page content with Ajax,
simply link to the page. It's recommended to only use ajax to load page
blocks, not whole pages. Please refer to the original Hijax article for a
good explanation: http://domscripting.com/blog/display/41
