Hi oranuf,

> Thanks for letting me stray off topic a bit.

It's ok (for me) on this one. This shouldn't only be a "i need help"-
list. But please don't expect any kind of solution from my side.

You touched a more "philosophic" topic that got a lot of "close to"
solutions/approaches on different places on the web. (Without looking
at code examples in test/dev pages [1] i can't tell you if i know an
approach that might help you). Another related and often asked
question is: "How can i attach the footer to the absolute bottom of my
page" and "I need a liquid layout, but this or that has to stay here
or there".

It really depends on your use case, but even more on the design
itself. In your case the design question is: Does the background-color
- of the column and the wrapper behind the column - match? If so no
one would actually see that it's not extending to the bottom/footer.
See what i mean? Web is not paper, browser is not browser and wise,
pre-thought (web-)design, that respects the limitations, often is the
most easy and therefore economic solution. If you use javascript/
jQuery you'll have to have in mind that there are users who'll see a
completely broken layout. So even if you can "fix" it with js, you'll
have to think about some sort of design fallback anyway.

Enough said. Discussion is open to all users, post links to possible
solutions, approaches, or just your thoughts and ideas. :)

Wish you best,
Kaiser.
