We all were on the same page as far as the importance of fund is concerned for our mission. But the problem was in getting answer to one question - how to raise fund? We don't want to raise fund from corporates because then we will have to take care of their interests. Raising fund from people may be a short term solution but not a sustainable solution. Today I was thinking very hard on finding a viable way of raising funds. A thought crossed my mind. I don't know if it could be possible. I want to discuss with you all. Also, please discuss this in the coming national meeting of chapter coordanitors. Why don't we start a business and use the earnings to support ourselves and the party? We can deal in a product that may be used by the majority of people in India. This way not only will we be able to raise fund but also reach more people. This will also help us start our mission at the earliest and realise our dreams earlier than we thought. Please discuss this thought seriously. In fact, I posted a portion on what was said by the CEO of Ashoka Foundation ( Mr Bill Drayton); that does not mean that it is the only definition; this I posted so that we will reflect on this and explore further; so, our friend has done an exploration and posted. Social entrepreneurship is so important for engineers and scientist because, we are also the social change agents. I must tell what I learnt from Mr A Ramakrishan, who was Dy. CEO of L&T that if we as engineers do our normal job that it itself is a good social service and delivering of our social responsibilities; we do not require to do anything extra-ordinary. This point is more relevant as more engineers are there in BUM & GCT78. Social entrepreneurship is a challenging job for many of us as this is one area which requires most of our talents for best application. Social sector is the less productive area, the less efficient area and least profitable area for corporates to have any interest; that challenging tasks are ahead for both managers and engineers. When we started GCT78, we made a point that we will not collect money from members for its operation. The model looked very attractive and very similar to any business model. And, of course it will work. If I can make my living operating in this less efficient market and make a reasonable income; I would just to it, many people, poor and backward people are going to benefit from my effort; I wish many young engineers to take up such assignments; I have lots of daring experiments, I myself wish to take up. The change managers pretty well know that in many occasions change (attitude) has to come from the managers themselves, before they can apply or tell their subjects! As our friend suggests that Charity Begins at Home; that abundant love and charity comes from Mother Herself; we are taught the art by Her. It is very sad many mothers and fathers are at receiving end in their old age as the life style is getting changed and life expectancy(age) is increasing. There are social entrepreneur opportunities here also, both serve and earn. For me, social entrepreneur simply means an entrepreneur in social sector. It is much neglected area by corporate and challenging for me, even very little margins are ok, but I go greedy to do it in more volumes so that my income is reasonable and my coverage is more and satisfying. With warm regards, Puru ===================================================== Dear Purushothaman, SUB: Social Entrepreneur-- real meaning. I have a different opinion about this Puru. I am a strong believer of the phrase 'CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME'. In my family, I have a lot of needy people for whom I am doing some help to bring them up in life. There are really very old people who are staying with their wards, who feel that they are a bit of burden to them as they are not allowed free to roam about. The burden becomes more painful if they are sick and they have to be treated regularly. The type of burden here is 80% financial and 20% is devotion of time. I could partly take care of the first part (Sometimes fully) and still I am unable to contribute the time required to relieve them. In simple terms, the people will be happy if you can take care of them fully and relieve them from this regular chores. I used to think of building a small house and keep all the so-called unwanted people in this home and give my best to them. I could see their happiness if you talk to them and listen to them at least for half an hour every day. They feel psychologically relieved because some one is listening to them. Some times it is too boring to listen to them as they start their 'Malarum Ninaiyvugal'. If you have the patience and sincerity to listen to them (After all what they need is this), you are capable of healing their ill feelings about the present generation. You feel more elated, if you are lucky enough to convince them that the younger generation also have their own world and they also need time and support for achieving their goal in life. It takes time and time and more time to help them by listening to their voice. You can see a radical change in their attitude afterwards. The only problem now is that they expect you regularly there and listen to them, hold their hands and take them for a walk, tell them what is happening in this world or even read a book or magazine to them. The difference here Puru is you are only spending money and time here and NOT earning. But you still have the fullest satisfaction of what you are having now by helping the poor. In my opinion, if some one takes care of their own surroundings, then there will not be a need for external help. What do you say. Both of us talking about the social responsibility. I view it in a different way. Thats it. More to come in this forum. --------------------------------- Love cheap thrills? Enjoy PC-to-Phone calls to 30+ countries for just 2¢/min with Yahoo! Do not interfere in others' business unless asked* Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in others' affairs. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic, and those who do not conform to our thinking must be criticized and steered to the right direction, our direction. This kind of attitude on our part denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence of God, for God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do because they are prompted to do so by the Divine within them. There is God to look after everything. Why are you bothered? Mind your own business and you will have your peace. *2. Forget and forgive* This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often nurture ill feeling inside our heart for the person who insults or harms us/"our mission". We foster grievances, which in turn results in loss of sleep, develops of stomach ulcer, high blood pressure and many other ailments that stealthily gnaws us from within. We forget that the insult or injury was done to us/"our mission" once but by nourishing the grievance we go on excavating the wound forever. Therefore it is essential that we cultivate the art of forgiving and forgetting. Believe in the justice of God and the doctrine of Karma. Let Him judge the act of the one who insulted you/"your mission" . Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forget, forgive, and march on. Learn to let go of things. Do not hold on to any thing. What you hold in your mind is what holds you back from being your true self. What you carry in your mind as negative thoughts from your past, is the undigested food that stays inside your consciousness like rotten meat emitting fowl energy. Let go of this foul energy with loving understanding and unending sympathy for all those who harmed or tried to harm you/"your mission",still acting against you/" your mission" or wanted you die, decay or get defeated in life. Forgive all those individually and repeatedly till you are at peace with yourself. Accept them as messengers of truth who have been sent into your life by the Divine to help you grow. Accept them as mere players whose sole purpose in your life is to teach you lessons or be a good human being and a good leader. Send peace into their homes and hearts and their minds and bodies. Unknot the knots of hatred. Severe the bonds of vengeance and the urge to get even. Let the poison flow out of your system, the poison of the past, the poison of ignorance and ill will. Learn to live with a detached mind. If you are detached even to a certain degree, you cultivate the attitude of accepting things as they come and this helps you to remain undisturbed by minor irritants and impediments in your daily life. *3. Do not crave for recognition* This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without selfish motive. They may praise you today because you are rich and have power but no sooner you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and start criticizing you. Moreover, each person is a mortal with a bundle of defects in them. No one individual is picture perfect. Then why do you value the words of praise of another mortal like you? Why do you crave for such false recognition and lose your peace of mind if the world does not praise you? Believe in yourself. People's praises do not last long and are not worth it. Do your duties ethically and sincerely and leave the rest to God. *4. Do not be jealous * We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know you work harder than your colleagues in the office but they get promotions, you do not. You started a business several years ago but you are not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year old. There are several examples like these in every walk of life. Should you be jealous? No, remember everybody's life is shaped by his previous Karma that has now become his destiny. If you are destined to be rich, not all the world can stop you. If you are not so destined, no one can help you either. Nothing will be gained by blaming others for your misfortune. Jealousy will not get you anywhere, but will only give you restlessness. *5. Change yourself according to the environment * If you try to change the environment single handedly, the chances are you may fail. Instead, change yourself to suit the environment. As you do this, even the environment, which has remained unfriendly for you, will mysteriously appear to be congenial and harmonious. *6. Endure what cannot be cured* This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations and accidents that are beyond our control. We must learn to put up with these things. We must learn to endure them cheerfully thinking, "God will it so, so be it". God's logic is beyond our comprehension. Believe it and you will gain in patience, in inner strength, in will power. *7. Do not bite more than you can chew* This maxim should be always remembered. We often tend to take more responsibilities than we are capable to carry out. This is done to satisfy our ego. Know your limitations. Why take on additional loads that may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external activities. If you have extra time, then spend it in an inward life of prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind, which make you restless. Fewer the thoughts, greater is the peace of mind. *8. Meditate regularly* Meditation makes the mind thoughtless. This is the highest state of peace of mind ( please try http://bharatudaymission.org/htm/meditation.htm or observing breath silently or with a mantra like OM, on each incoming and outgoing breath for 15+ minutes ). Try and experience it. If you meditate earnestly for half an hour every day, you will tend to become calm during the remaining twenty-three and a half hours. Your mind will not be disturbed as much as before. You must gradually increase the period of daily meditation. You may think this will interfere with your daily work. On the contrary, this will increase your efficiency and you will turn out more work in less time. *9. Never leave the mind vacant* Empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil deeds start in the mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile. Actively follow a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. You must decide what you value more - money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work or temple work may not always earn you more money, but you will have a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even if you are resting physically, occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name (*japa*). *10. Do not procrastinate and never regret* Do not waste time in wondering "should I or shouldn't I?" Days, weeks, months and years may be wasted in that futile mental debating. You can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all future happenings. Always remember God has His own plan too. Value your time and do things. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can rectify your mistakes and succeed the next time. Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET! Whatever happened was destined to happen only that way. Take it as the will of God. You do not have the power to alter the course of God's will. Why cry over the spilt milk? *May God help us remain at peace With ourself and the world Om shanti shanti shanti* ============================================================================== You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "BM_discussion" group.
