Hi Jagannath,
Dr. Venugopal is the director of AIIMS... Whatever his problems with the
ministry now are you can't refute the fact that he's a great cardiac surgeon
and teacher which was recognized by the government with a Padma Bhushan.

Dr. Venugopal is the director of AIIMS NOT the God of health to solve all these
problems. These questions should've been put to Dr.Ramadoss who is obviously
more powerful being the Union health Minister.

I don't know what your motives are behind taking such a Anti-Venugopal stand...
Either Casteist or Cheap Publicity... Please have some consideration for the
intellect of the people you're writing to. Stripping of degrees from a person
just because he was silent on issues which he doesn't have a power to
regulate.... ha ha ha

Subject: [BM_discussion] AIIMS issue : 20 point failure of Dr P Venugopal.

  Dear Sirs,

Many of you are up in arms that I have supported Dr Ramadoss in the tussle
between him and Dr P Venugopal. My mailbox is full of mails critcising my views.

I am not in favour of the medical community in general as they are criminally
silent regarding the many glaring shortcomings that the fraternity is facing
today. Can anyone please let me know what steps Dr Venugopal has taken to
address the following problems plaguing the industry?

  1. The doctor-drug industry nexus.
  2. Lack of continuous education for doctors.
  3. Lack of exposure to and knowledge of other healing methods.
  4. Over medicating purely to achieve industry targets.
  5. Overusing the surgery room for increased profits.
  6. Prescribing unnecessary diagnostic tests.
  7. Lack of concern for the patients, treating them like commodities
      and exploiting them mercilessly.
  8. Not raising voice against dubious and dangerous medical
practices like vaccinations, body scans, x-rays, radiation, ultrasound,
chemotherapy, ART in case of AIDS, GE drugs etc.
  9. Refusing to see the emerging evidence that bacteria and viruses
cannot be the cause of disease.
10.Not educating the public on healthy living.
11.Not speaking out against the junk food and drinks industry.
12.Not speaking out against pollution and environmental dangers
and related matters that affect health.
13.Not revising the current health policy of the country which
does not put adequate emphasis on hygiene, nutrition, prevention
of illnesses and is woefully out of tune with ground realities.
14.Not informing the patient about side effects of various medicines
and medical procedures and obtaining informed consent before
     administering them.
15.Complete failure in curbing chronic diseases, let alone cure them.
16.Treating the condition without hunting for the cause.
17.The rising incidence of iatrogenic (medicine caused) diseases and deaths.
18.Creating unnecessary panic and fear of disease in patients.
19.Unnecessarily criticising proven holistic healing systems and trying to
convey that they are "dangerous" for health.
20.Retaining critical patients who they cannot cure instead of referring them
       to other medical systems.

Now please tell me why I should support Dr Venugopal in his bid to retain the
Chairmanship of our country's premier medical institution? I believe Dr
Venugopal should be stripped of all his degrees and awards for keeping silent
on the above issues, which are more important than the issue of who scores over
whom in the present tussle over power.

From: Jagannath Chatterjee

Dear Dr Prahalathan,

I was not trying to be funny, nor am I a casteist or an oppurtunist. I take
the side of patients in their fight against insensitive doctors. In other
fields like engineering etc. we talk about inert structures that affect human
beings indirectly, but the medical industry directly deals with the lives of
the people.

The issues I have raised should be the concern of EVERY doctor. Unless the
honest doctors speak up the system is not going to change because the system
recognises only the majority voice.

Dr Venugopal IS guilty of keeping silent on this issue as being the Director
of AIIMS he is second only to the health minister, or rather he is above the
minister because not all health ministers are doctors, unlike in the present
case.

Dr Venugopal is a professional. He is thus also expected to have the macro
view and not just involve himself in the nitty gritties of the institution.
Instead of trying to prove his personal supremacy or trying to cling to power
by using political clout, he would have made his country proud if he would have
concentrated on overcoming the glaring shortcomings of the medical industry.

He cannot claim that he is not aware of these issues. If a non medical person
like me, who has been at the wrong end of the medical profession, can return
from his death bed, study about medical claims, conduct his own investigation
and find out the real problems then a person who has studied to become a doctor
and has gone on to become the most eminent person in his field should feel
ashamed of himself for turning a blind eye to burning medical issues.

  Regards,
  Jagannath.

it is not very difficult to be an expert RTI volunteer.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This mail contains following topics :
1. BM Pune : Update on Activities in last week
2. BM Nashik : minutes of meeting
3. BM Nashik : meeting announcement
4. BM Bikaner : New Team Formation
5. BM Delhi : Down with Terrorism : Join candle light march

1. BM Pune : Update on Activities in last week
Dear All,
We will have discussion on bm_pune group and if you ever feel many mails
are coming then please edit your
membership<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BM_pune/join>to 'Daily
Digest' .

In last week we have had
1) *Visit Orphan Home Visit by*
 Manoj,
 Pradnya,
 Amol,
 Jagdeesh,
 Rahul,
 Narendran.
The purpose of visit was to assess the need of Home and find ways of
helping them. As immediate help we will give them a set book of IX std.
Finance as usual need. We will go through their accounts and then see how
much expenditure is required for a child in a year. Some govt. subsidy can
also be given to such home, but probably the officer is asking for
undertable deal. More details will follow from people who visited.

2) *Attended presentation of TTS(Tribal Talent Search) Program by * *Milind
Dhatte* <http://www.milindthatte.com/>*
*
 *Brief idea*

Talented youth in tribal area with or without education continue to work as
unskilled labour. Virtual absence of opportunities and the bondage of
struggling for subsistence inhibit their talent. A handful of educated
tribal youth succeed in getting jobs in cities, they leave their villages
and community behind. Their prosperity probably helps their individual
households but does not help the community. Development efforts in tribal
villages continue to be dependent and tend to make dependency chronic.
Health and education projects by NGOs and governments – though absolutely
essential – are in essence a charity. Their purpose is not to promote
prosperity in tribal villages. Self-employment loans by government and
semi-government bodies are often wasted, for they do not come with a package
of entrepreneurship development. Tribal youth hardly have an opportunity to
learn market wisdom and entrepreneurship.

Tribal Talent Search program (TTS) is targeted at addressing some of these
problems.

*The TTS mission* is to find talented tribal youth (a flexible age group of
16-25 years) and support them with finance and capacity-building for a
limited period of 24 to 36 months. The program takes the form of a partially
guided fellowship. The selected youth get an honorarium every month. This is
to free them from the worries of subsistence of their families and to
enhance some risk-bearing capacity for the would-be entrepreneur. The period
of 24 months has a staggered program of orientations, trainings, and
workshops for developing the youth as entrepreneurs or as leaders of
development.

*The TTS vision *is that the program will create a group of socially
sensitive and locally prosperous individuals. These individuals will be free
of government or political dependency. They shall form the next generation
of "leaders of development" within tribal communities. The TTS shall develop
them as individuals who care for their community and help other talented
youth prosper. The program envisions a ripple effect creating more and more
hubs of self-propelled prosperity in tribal areas.
The program has concept 'Resource Person group" in which a person is
supposed to devote 15 days a year in tribal area, live with identified
youth, understand them and guide/suggest/help them in developing local
enterprenuer in them as the object said above.
Please follow with either Milind or me for more details and interest.

3) *Tree Planatation*
I got information on saturday from Tekadi Person that there is going to
tree plantation in Parvati Hill Side. Program was on Sun morning 7:30, so
couldn't inform the group. We had planted more than 40 plants. We also saw
snakes which were rescued by some of Tekadi guys. Later I was given chance
to introduce to Tekadi people, around 20 in number, mostly students. There
we met Mr. Vinod Jain a very active tree saver who has done lot of work in
saving and was able to save more 400 trees in 3 months from illegal cutting.
He said that there are three kinds of permission about tree in Pune Muncipal
Region.
1. Cut the tree and plan at least three more tree else where.(Small Trees)
2. Transplant the tree.(Mostly mid sized).
3. Trimming, mostly for large trees.
So if you see anybody cutting tree, immediately ask for the permission and
if person refuse to show the premission. You can contact Mr. Vinod
Jain(9422305735) . Keep this contact handy. He will take care all things
like dealing with Police or PMC. They have been successfully able to save
hundreds of trees.

We had meeting on Sunday and was attended by
Prashant Nandi
Rishikesh
Satya
Ashwin
Ketaki
Deependra(First Timer)

We had discussed about *ALL Hands Meeting on 23 July. *More details will
follow in separate thread. It was decided that we will comeup with
executable plan for next six months by All Hands meeting and preparation
will start in forrm of discussion on group. Keep following.

Let's Keep Marching towards "The Rise of a Great Nation".

Hello Friends,

We should take this thing in mind. For any movement to become a
success it should have a direct link with the general public.

May be various government policies fail because they are not in
touch with the people.

For example, YUVA a new initiative against AIDS. The
colloboroters are NACO and Ministries of youth.

What I want to say is "are this policies really in touch with people."

We should check these things. Right to Information Act is a great
act which may tell about these things.

Dear Friends, Population growth is a problem that few of us have the courage
to face upfront. It is infact the largest problem facing the world today. Never
before in recorded history has the world faced such an organised assault from
man.

This problem negates all gains in various spheres. Human resource has today
become a liability, not an asset. Sometimes it feels cruel that we are
proceeding at a breakneck speed towards more sophisticated automation when
labour is so cheap and the unemployment situation so acute.

We are also seeing a disturbing trend where one can be gainfully employed for
a very short time. By the time one approaches the late 30's one can sense the
pink slip approaching. Career oppurtunities for the middle aged is restricted.
The board room is getting younger by the day with young recruits occupying
senior positions.

The future seems bleak. One has to earn fast and earn the maximum while the
going is good to keep up with the times. All our efforts at framing a
corruption less society may well be a dream. Honesty and ethics are a load on
the shoulder, they have to be offloaded in order to progress in the "right
direction". Honesty is no longer the best policy, it is a millstone around the
neck.

Resource wise we are on the brink of acute scarcity of the commodities we
have always taken for granted, the minimum food, water, land and natural
resources. Oil is expected to last only another few decades. Vital minerals too
face the same fate. Forests may wear away faster. Pollution is a threat that is
looming large by the day. The routine activities of the world's population is
beyond the tolerance limit of our fragile ecosystem. We are hemmed in from all
sides.

And yet we are surging forward, destroying, plundering the world, in the name
of growth, in the name of progress.

Will the population problem ever be resolved without a catastrophe affecting
the earth? It seems unlikely. War and natural calamities, epidemics of fatal
diseases seem the only solution. Or is it? That is a question no one likes to
answer, but the answer stares us in the face. There is no escaping it.

  Regards,
  Jagannath.

Growing imbalance between the economic development and population growth
http://southasia.oneworld.net/article/view/136252/1/6684

The World Population Day is being marked worldwide with focus on
reproductive health of young people. The growing imbalance between the economic
development and population growth has been a major global challenge.

The developing nations are the ones that have been confronted with the
demographic imbalance as population growth has outstripped the economic growth
rate. To look at the global economic balance-sheet, nearly three million people
almost half of the world's population are absolute poor, who live on less than
two dollars a day.

The imbalance between the population and economic growth is posing a serious
humanitarian crisis in the developing countries. Despite serious efforts to
control high population growth, the situation is still far from satisfactory.

Nepal is also not an exception and shares similar problem as other developing
countries. According to experts, the economic growth needs to be at least
double that of the population growth rate. Nepal's population growth is 2.25
per cent whereas the GDP growth rate is slightly more than that. Nepal's
population took only three years to reach 24.8 million from the earlier 23
million. These figures have, of course, sounded an alarm bell, which are
indicative of the fact that Nepal is heading towards further humanitarian and
developmental crisis if the present trend of population growth is not checked
and development activities swiftly accelerated. Other development indicators,
too, have not shown very positive trends.

Already stung by massive poverty, huge unemployment and slow development, Nepal
has already experienced several social, economic and environmental problems. As
the population is growing rapidly, the nation is increasingly facing food
insecurity.

The growing population rate has put more stress on the natural resources, which
is likely to create further catastrophes. The country is facing more
environmental problems now than ever before. Poverty and population growth
appear to be twin children and it is apparent that without addressing one, the
other problem cannot be solved.

The other aspect that needs to be addressed is the knowledge about reproductive
health among the young people. The knowledge of reproductive health helps
decide the family size. This would simultaneously address poverty and check
population growth. It is now imperative that serious efforts from all sides
need to be made to strike a balance between the population and economic growth
to ensure a sustainable future for the country and the people.
