Subject: [uuc] 528E Should I?

Okay folks, here's the update. As some of you know, I sold my 320is
and am now looking for a 5-er (family car). It's been really, really
hard to find a decent 5-er with a 5-speed manual. Those that I've
seen are in poor condition and have really high miles. I did see a
okay '86 533i 5-speed, but the seller wanted way too much for it
(almost CDN$9000 with taxes).

Anyhoo, I'm getting this feeling that I'll be buying an automatic
(ducking for cover...) after everybodys advice. And tonight I talked
with the owner (lady) of an '83 528e auto. She's the 2nd owner (7
years), and the car has always been garage kept and serviced at an
authorised BMW shop. No rust, dark green, few power options (which I
think is good) , and 276,000 kms on the clock. She says she doesn't
drive it hard, and uses it to commute to and from work. She is asking
CDN$4500, but I'm hoping she will be able to lower the price when she
sees my sad, desperate face...

Advice? I'm going to call her back to say that I'll meet up with her
(she lives 2hrs away in another city). Should I go for this? This
5-er is the best one yet, and my rental car is just a bunch on molded
plastic on wheels!

Of course I'll get another bimmer for me to do autox with, but this
5-er is for family uses only. HOWEVER, tell me what I can do to a
528e to make it go faster, handle better, etc... (can it be chipped?)

Desperately seeking bimmer,

Chris Chong

Dry up? I heard they all leak! Except the eBay one . . .

That stuff (Legend Five) looks OK, but I've successfully used "barbecue black" paint
on my calipers for years (~ $3 @ K-Mart), primarily to prevent metal surface
oxidation, once the original caliper paint burns/wears/rusts off.

It's been bantered about for years that some of the best first-time high-speed
drivers school students learned to drive, or drive regularly, on roads (and parking
lots <g>) in the snow belt, and that even though they are unfamiliar with the
particulars of first-time exposure to a track-driving environment, they do seem to
possess an innate "car control" ability. I can vouch for this theory with many of
my past novice drivers school students. If the inevitable mistake occurred, their
reaction consistently seemed to be instinctively automatic, preventing a small
mistake from becoming something much more serious. A dry track at high speed is
exactly the same as a snow covered road, or parking lot, at slower speeds...
Vehicle dynamic-wise.... Donuts anyone?

I glanced over the car on ebay... impressive specimen, but hardly worth that
amount of money IMHO. Just a quick note for those who would pay close to $20k
for said car.

- -the trunk lid looks slightly discolored (yellowed) compared to the rest of
the car... while this body discoloration always happens to red M3's... and to
a (much) lesser extent diamondschwartz and silver cars... I can't recall ever
seeing this as a problem on white cars... particularly one that has lived
such a charmed life. I noticed _just_ the trunklid/spoiler looked
different... the bumpers, side skirts, etc all match quite well. Anyone have
any input here?

- -the "///M 3" front grill badge is not in the correct place... for $17+k I
would have to ask myself "self, why is that?"

I am sure there are some other odds and ends, but I don't have _that_ much
spare time on my hands (ok, we hicks are under >12" of snow... both my school
and my place of employment have been closed all week, and I can't even get to
my fabricator's shop (under 2' of snow in the boonies) to pick up my racecar
so I can start rebuilding my engine).
