kept one-up-ing me. I stopped bidding, checked out the email address of the
other bidder, and it was an alias for the seller (didn't cover his tracks
particularly well). He then contacted me through his "seller" email after
the auction and tried to get me to buy the item at my last bid. Sleeze-bag.

The other thing to watch out for in ebay is if you are selling something. A
bidder can start low and then log on as a different name and bid
rediculously high. Since the bid is so high, no one else bids. At the very
last minute, he can withdraw his bid, leaving the seller stuck with one very
low bid. Of course, if you set a reserve, you are protected, but not
everyone sets reserves, since they cost more and they may not even know
where to set it.

First off, sorry about your accident, happy your here to post to the list about
it.

As far as a lawsuit is concerned, I think you need to ask a couple of questions:
- - Is the airbag supposed to deploy in a side-impact?
- - Do you think the airbag would have lessened/prevented the injury you sustained?

If your answer to both of these questions is "Yes", you should seek legal counsel
(from someone qualified, like a lawyer, instead of me 8^).

First off - sorry for the screwy "blank" post. Trigger finger
slipped.

Theo - I'm glad to know that you're relatively uninjured considering
your description.

The reckless driving ticket you can most likely fight and win - the
cop is most likely basing his findings on the results. If the roads
were truly clear for the majority of the road with few icy patches,
then travelling @ the posted speed limit was prudent. Otherwise, it
may be seen as reckless driving. I'm unsure if NJ is another
communist state that requires a citation to be issued at every event.

As for your potential lawsuit - save your money. The air bags may
not have deployed BUT considering your injuries, especially to your
pelvis, the side bags probably wouldn't have mattered. Did you hit
your head or shoulder on the drivers' window and suffer any permanent
damage? If so, you may have lawsuit material, otherwise, you have a
money sink that will result in huge bills for you and a court victory
for BMW (and the airbag manufacturer and the side glass manufacturer
and the seat manufacturer and the guardrail manufacturer and the road
designer and so forth).

Unfortunately, this type of "sue'em" attitude has resulted in huge
expenses for large companies that ultimately result in price increase
for the consumers. The only way you could have remained uninjured in
this scenario is if you were on the other side of the car. A lawsuit
will merely serve to prove that to you and the rest of the world.

David,

I had the TracTop armrest/cupholder in my 90 325iC. You can get these at the
dealer. Of course they cost too much, and are a bit of a pain to install.
But it does give you an armrest at a nice level and a cupholder that will
hold cans and most travel mugs, but not 16 or 20 oz. bottles or Big Gulps.
The armrest starts to feel a bit hard on long trips but is perfectly fine
for commuting. It's available in any color you like so long as it's black.
Here's a link for you:
http://www.bmwusa.com/virtual/accessories/viewaccessory.cfm?enumber=E30&cate
gory_id=INTERIOR&accessory_id=74

I would not recommend this armrest if you have a manual transmission. It
will get in the way of shifting.

Airbag Lights.

When the airbag warning lights come on as you start the car, and stay on for
90 to 120 seconds or so before going out, that's the computer telling you
it's not sure if the person in the seat is wearing his/her seatbelt.
Therefore the airbag WILL DEPLOY at a higher rate that if you are belted in,
assuming you are not belted in. E36's are notorious for the seat belt
switch going south, so this is well known. So they will work, just you're
gonna get a facefull of airbag even moreso than usual. If the light comes
on, stays on, and does not go out you have a different kind of fault.
Airbags are designed to inflate on frontal and 3/4 "off-front" impacts only,
not side impacts.

Geeee......too bad about the wreck. BMW design is at fault, the dealer is
at fault, the cops are at fault, and mother nature is at fault. Not the
driver though, who was "driving the posted speed limit" during icy
conditions. Ahhhhhh.....speed limit signs are designed for maximum safe
speed as determined by the traffic engineers in normal (dry), non-freezing
conditions.

DOH.

Sometimes ya just gotta admit you screwed up and hit the wall. By the end of
today, you'll probably sue wanna sue the guy who cut you out of the belt
because doing so surely aggravated your injury. Go get 'em....and if you
ever make it to a Driver's School be sure to warn the Instructor AND the
Track Management AND the Chief Instructor. that you'll be there to sue them
if you go off track. It would be their fault.......

Happens all the time in NY. The ticket is given for "speed improper for road
conditions". And it's not an easy ticket to beat.

The stock radio would have been wired with a 12 volt continuous feed for just this
purpose. Look around behind the dash for a red/white lead . Alternatively, you could
splice into the cigarette lighter lead - it should be 12 volt continuous. If that
fails, there are other continuous 12 volt leads around - use a volt meter to check the
leads on the rear of the headlight switch,
for example. Usually and lead that's red is 12 volt continuous.

You can order all the carbon trim from the local dealer. It is all on the

On monday I am having the oil pan (cracked) replaced on my E30 325i. I
know that the oil pan gasket needs to be replaced, but what other parts
will I need to get for the mechanic to do the job right. Other gaskets?
Do I need to use all new bolts? I ask this because I am trying to save $
by getting the parts myself. Gotta save money, since replacement is a
bear, and labor will definatly be the most expensive part of the work.

On another note, I was behind a beautiful M5 last night here in Boston.
Odd thing was, car was covered in road salt, like everything else here. I
admired it for a couple of blocks, then pulled next to him at a traffic
light. Pissed me off to see that the driver was probably about 19 or so
(probably a rich snot Boston University student). Obviously didn't give
a hoot about the car, since anyone who cares would garage it during the
winter. For those who worship at the Roundel temple, such sacrilege
should be grounds for a severe beating with used E30 timing belts. Yes,
I am jealous, and it dissapoints me to see someone take such poor care of
such a great car.

I think the lighter is switched with ignition. I ran from the lighter to a
volt meter and it was off when the car is off. I would check the headlight
switch wires as they are always hot. If you have the radio removal tool,
yes, that would be an easy 12volt continuous hookup.

based on a bunch of published numbers in Ward's Auto World (sitting here at my

David,

If you are asking for torque conversion, it is:

1 ft-lb = 1.3558 N-m

or 1 N-m = 0.7375 ft-lb
