Hello, I have a 90 535i and recently (mostly during wet weather) the steering sort of feels like im loosing the power steering capability. This only happens when I turn the wheel more than 30deg. or so. Kind of a jerking sensation to best describe it. Could this be my steering pump or maybe a loose belt? Any way to be sure and are either difficult to change. Thanks in advance... Because accidents happen in bad weather and "the State" shouldn't pre-judge every event as criminal activity and levy heft fines and punishment upon the unlucky. > Some facts about a Reckless Driving ticket here in NJ: > - First of all, a reckless ticket can be written based an officer's judgement > and discretion at the scene of an accident. Police officers usually use their > judgement, and they don't just write it for the hell of it. They are, after > all, trained for this. They are, after all, trained in the fine art of revenue collection. State Troopers are only marginally involved in "Protecting and Serving". They are mostly sitting on the side of the road watching for "velocity infractions" while the drunk drivers hold 54mph until they broadside a minivan full of little kids. At least the Troopers are there to mop up after the fact while we all drive by and wonder why he didn't stop the drunk when he was weaving out of the parking lot of the bar up the road. Ever wonder why drunk checkpoints aren't right outside the parking lots of bars? Hmmm... My good experience to bad experience ratio with NJ State Troopers and NJ Police is very low. I do not engage in criminal activity, yet the sight of a white car with lights on the top is no comfort. They have done very well in fostering an atmosphere of fear and mistrust in everyone I know. Over the years, on the rare occassion where I may get a flat tire or mechanical breakdown on the side of a major road, there's never a Trooper passing by to help... except for two times: 1) a Trooper just passed right by and left me still stranded, hood up and hazards on. I'm surprised he didn't wave. 2) The police officer that threatened to have my car towed if I couldn't move it immediately (I had a blown electric fan fuse which I was replacing, otherwise my car was overheating). Bad experiences? Cops lying about traffic incidents that I was a witness to, lying about speed gotten by pacing, and towing my car for a 1-day past due inspection sticker right in front of my own house. > - A reckless driving ticket is often confused with a careless driving ticket. > I still don't think either have to be witnessed by an officer. Case in > point - if you steal a car, and you're caught driving a stolen car, your held > accountable for stealing that car. Even though the officer didn't see you, > does that mean he can't arrest you for grand theft auto? Nope. Fallacious argument: being caught driving a stolen car *is* being seen stealing the car. An officer seeing your car crashed when there are icy roads cannot in any rational or sane way conclude that you were "reckless driving" (au contraire, you were "wreckful" - arf, arf). Accidents can be legitimate accidents, meaning no fault or misconduct. Show me intent that the driver meant to wreck his car and badly injure himself, then you can write the "reckless driving" ticket. Almost the exact same accident happened to me, exact same ticket, and I can assure you that I was driving slow, safe, and attentively... but wet and slick cement in a RWD car can lead to an off-road excursion that I surely did not intend. > - Reckless Driving here in the State of NJ carries a severe penalty, 5 > points. Ouch. Careless is only 2 points. And being a decent human being would give the officer different kind of points - the kind that go in your Karma Account. Must have been slowed up by the snow to write his "performance analysis" minimum quantity of tickets that day. > - My opinion is that he should seek the ADVICE of legal counsel, in any > severe accident, regardless of circumstances (ESPECIALLY since he's got the 5 > point Reckless ticket) Exactly, and consider bringing suit against the state and the officer for "failure to plow" and "unlawful prosecution". - - Rob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 01:21:10 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] <FS> E28 Power Seats 1988 Pearl Beige comfort seats, full power and everything works. The SP9000s are great for traction - WET weather traction. A good answer to your question can only be given based on a few more details from you: 1) What kind of driving do you do? 2) Do you live in a place where you have to worry about rain or snow? 3) How important is tire life or noise to you? 4) How much do you want to spend? All of these factors are what should be taken into account before deciding on a tire. - - Rob - ----- Original Message ----- From: Jam Master J <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Looking for tire opinions. > I am about to buy new tires for my E30. You'll find out that harder is not better. Play with settings and find what works for you. I usually have 2.4 - 2.8 camber, sways 1/2 - 3/4 for a FR. Much different setup for a FWD tho. Have fun! What kind of traction are you looking for? Dry performance traction, or good rain traction with decent (but not great) dry traction? The SP9000 fits the latter description. The SP9000 isn't known for it's dry grip, but for a wet performance tire it doesn't do too badly in the dry. But it isn't in the same league as the dry performance tires. The SP8000 is grippier in the dry but alas isn't available in any suitable 16" sizes for an E30. >Was looking at Pirelli's. P Zero's or maybe P7000's. Someone also >mentioned Nitto's? Nittos aren't all that great . . . . but i've driven students cars on P-Zeros and P7000s and i was quite impressed with their grip. Have you considered the Toyo T1s? They're reportedly not as grippy as their T1 predecessor, but still pretty good. Another tire folks like is the Yokohama Sport, then there's always the Continental Contact Sport.... But if i had to buy a 16" tire to use in Southern California, it would be the surprisingly grippy Sumitomo HTRZ in 225/45-16. At $95.00, it's around half the price of the other top dogs and i consider it to be the best bargain out there in that size (other sizes too). It's supposedly based on the Dunlop carcass with a tread pattern that's very similar to the SP8000. It also does very well in the Tire Rack's Customer Survey. >I will be running 205/55 16's. That size is a full inch taller than the stock diameter for an E30. It'll hurt accelleration, and make your speedometer read slower than your actual road speed, not to mention they may rub the fenders and the inner liners here and there. Here's three 16"sizes that will work on an E30: 215/45-16 (23.6" diameter, noticeably shorter than stock) 225/45-16 (23.9" diameter, the same diameter as stock) 205/50-16 (24.1" diameter, slightly taller than stock) >Any input, advice, or experience is much appreciated. Email response >preferred. Thanks, >Josh Murray >LA Chapter, CCA Go to the Tire Rack website and do a "search by size" of the 225/45-16 and compare price and read all the Surveys and Test Results.
