Is there anything that is worth checking before I bring the car in for repair. I've done brakes,struts, etc so I can handle straightforward repair work. BTW, the car has 85K miles, new brake pads/rotors and fluid change last year. Before getting out the tar and looking for chickens, realize that there was misunderstanding and miscommunication on all sides in this (sides most of you don't even know about) and that you aren't, and probably won't be, party to the details. Ya'll don't REALLY think that Dave Farnsworth is going to get any towing life outta a 740i, do you? Lessee....what does a Seven trans cost these days?....about $ 5,000.00 as a rebuild? And the cost of a rear end diff? For that, you can buy a proper (used) pickup truck. While the car may be *rated* to tow 5,000 lb., that means it can handle that much before the frame members start falling apart. That doesn't mean the car's powertrain is going to last, only that the rear end won't disintegrate on the highway, at least not right away. I've done LOTS of towing over the years, from Racing Motorcycles to Utility Trailers to BMW's to 28' Sailboats. There are certain things you want in a tow vehicle and it all boils down to getting the right tool for the job. I.E., You can remove a nut with a pair of vice grips, but do it enough times and your fastener gets boogered up. Even in the best of circumstances the Vice Grips are awkward and difficult to use. BUY THE OPEN END WRENCH fer cryin' out loud.... 740i = Vice Grips Ford F250/F350 w/ Powerstroke Diesel = Snap-On Flank Drive Wrench Here's what you really want in a tow vehicle if you're towing cars ( 3,000 lb for the cars, 1,500 lb for the trailer): 1.) A long wheelbase. Short wheelbase vehicles like most cars and SUV's (Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc.) are very tiring to drive with a car hauler trailer. The longer the wheelbase, the better the ride on the tow vehicle and the easier it is to drive. Extended cab pickups and Suburban/Excursion class vehicles are perfect outside of buying a Class 6 or higher *real* tractor cab. 2.) A diesel engine. These torque monsters may not be quite as fast, but they simply don't care when you come up to a grade on the highway. In a gas engine, the torque runs out and the engine downshifts ALL THE TIME. Then you're pulling up the hill (even gentle ones) at 5,000 rpm, making a hellva racket, and its hard on the powertrain. You can never have too much torque in a tow vehicle. Horsepower rating is a non-issue. 3.) Automatic Trans. Makes your life so much easier, especially when backing the rig in close quarters or up inclines. 4.) Correct Hitches. Forget about towing a car & trailer combo on those silly little 'integrated' bumper hitches on many of the current year pickup trucks. That just makes your bumper collapse eventually. So why beat up / ruin your nice 7 or 5er to pull a car?
