Subject: [uuc] <E28>Re:Emissions failure and occillating idle on 535i(LONG)

OK, time to solve the occillating idle on my '88 535ia as it now seems
to be affecting idle emissions. I'd appreciate any comments, as I'm
trying to fix this myself. I have basic knowledge about the Motronic
from the Probst book, experience, and other sources. I really don't want
to cut into the Kevlar helmet fund to take it to the shop. My current
helmet is a Snell M85 Marushin overdue enough for replacement that the
padding is disintegrating. I've tried to replace it a few times in the
past and just haven't found one that fits as well as the Marushin.
Shaking bits of padding out of my hair is telling me how stupid I've
been. So I really need to wrak braintrusts to fix this so I don't wind
up wrakking MY brain literally. I will try to put the pertinent stuff first.

Way high HC(559ppm) @ idle, idle CO: 0.63%
California Limits at idle for my car are HC:120ppm and CO 1.0%

My readings at 2500 RPM are HC:35ppm and CO 0.47%
California limits at 2500 RPM are HC:140ppm and CO 1.0%

Exhaust CO2 at idle is 13.0%. O2 is 2.3 (measured idle of 669, although
it goes back and forth between 600-800)
Exhaust CO2 at 2500(actually 2407rpm) is 14.4%. O2 is 0.5%

Watching the meter, the tech told me the HC numbers jump at the same
time as the idle transition. I neglected to ask him if it jumps on the
way up or down. He was convinced that the problem was the Mass Air
Sensor(even after I pointed out twice that this car has an Air Flow
Meter instead) so I didn't bother asking too many questions.
I've had a low or loping idle for as long as I've owned this car(almost
4 years). This is the first time it hasn't passed the biennial
inspection. Previously, I've passed with numbers low enough to qualify
as a Ultra Low Emissions vehicle! That was probably due to several
vacuum leaks leaning out the mixture. Those have all been fixed
including the injector o-rings.
Car has 156,000 miles, mine for last 65,000. Engine related mods are a
Dinan chip and a Metric Mechanic System 300 exhaust. The exhaust is
comprised of the 50mm Euro downpipes, a 2 into 1 Catalytic converter,
and a Bosal muffler.
Recently got new spark plugs(old ones all look good and alike-new ones
gapped wide), cap&rotor, and valve adjustment (.014 stone cold) as well
as cleaning and reoiling the drop-in K&N air filter
Parts replaced over past few years(some more than once) include:
Ignition wires, all intake rubber with the exception of the charcoal
canister hoses, oil filler gasket, idle control valve, Main relay,
cold start injector, injector o-rings.

Items checked: All injectors are clicking(all original), all electrical
connections are have been cleaned or checked, including plug wires. Fuel
pressure checks ok per Bentley. Temp sensor & thermo time switch in
range. Air flow meter tests ok although resistance track is worn-most
severely at idle position. Reference Sensor and Speed sensor
removed, cleaned and swapped with no change. Replaced a few vacuum hoses
again and verified no leaks as much as I could by spraying carb cleaner
at all joints. Dipstick seals well. O2 sensor is a year and a half old
and is putting out ~230-~900mv. Tried running open loop for a few days
with no change. Battery voltage and connections good.

Oh, by the way, the car runs spectacularly at all engine rpms but idle.
Pulls well and no misfires. Idles fairly strongly now with just a hint
of a miss at the same time the rpm occillates.

What's next? Air Flow Meter? Ignition Coil? leaking fuel injector? or
maybe a few clogged ones throwing off the computer and flooding the
other ones? even though all the spark plugs look normal?

Subject: Re:[uuc] M5 vs. Viper & Rolex 24

All I can say is, the Vipers did a lot better at the Rolex 24 than the
M5s did. What? You didn't see any M5s at Daytona? Me neither. or LMRs or
BMW factory support of any kind. I don't know how modified those Vipers
were(I'm assuming A LOT) but you don't win a 24 hour race with dumb
luck. Let alone finish 1-2.
I'm still lusting after a M5 as I always have, and will probably buy one
variation or another used in the next few years. But after watching
last weeks race, I can't help looking at Vipers in a different light and
considering owning one, something I never had an interest in before last
week.
Any one from BMW corporate out there? I've owned all German cars with
the exception of one Toyota & one Datsun and I'm considering an American
car based on their performance at Daytona. I have NEVER considered
owning an American car before.
BMW not having a strong corporate presence at "The premier Road Racing
endurance event in the US" is unthinkable and a sad indicator of the
direction of this carmaker. This event showcases the two strengths BMW
is historically known for: exceptional handling & quality engineering.
What happened to the LMRs? I know there was a class shift but????

Subject: [uuc] <WOB> My Viper lust is over

My Viper Lust lasted all of 58 hours. That would be from the end of the
Rolex 24 Sunday to the moment I saw what one of my mates just picked up.
Tuesday night at the local watering hole he produced the latest fruit
of being a private auto importer/exporter: a Genuine Ferrari Dino GT
with just 12,000 miles on its 2.4l V6. Already having had a few beers I
declined asking to take it for a spin. Good thing as I then found out it
still had the stock nearly 30 year old tires on it. Sure it's not a
"real" Ferrari since it doesn't have a V-12 and it isn't red but it's
close enough for me, especially since it's a bit more affordable. Maybe
I'll stop by his house and borrow it for a few hours this weekend. It
sure sounded good.

So the Viper is long forgotten. I'd still settle for an M5 but I wonder
what old Countachs are going for these days?

Windbags, er airbags aren't all they're cracked up to be. Just ask
the KC Chiefs player that was killed when his Stupid Useless Vehicle
rolled - no seatbelt BUT lots of windbags. Don't know if you've read
all the negatives to windbags - namely causing decapitation in
PROPERLY BELTED children and short folk. Side windbags that do the
same thing - do you really think this is a good thing too?

Given my druthers, I'd like to disable my windbag - I'll sign a
release that says I'd prefer to walk away from the accident without
two broken arms and a broken nose from the windbag. Just like people
that are killed w/o seat belts, if someone wants to disable a windbag
AND knows all the risks, let'em. If they're killed, they got their
just rewards.

antenna will extend when the radio/cassette unit is turned on. It does
not matter if you
are listing to radio or to cassette, antenna will be up.

It should go down if you turn radio off regardless of whether the
ignition is on or off.

Someone could have messed up the wiring in the trunk if the antenna goes
up whenever
the ignition is on. I believe there is a 'hot when radio on' and a 'hot
when ignition on'
and even a 'hot at all times' in the wiring. Someone might have
switched a couple.

OK - I'll be picky - it was never called a Ferrari although that was
the manufacturing company. The "proper" name for the car is a Dino
246.

A local racer/associate has a Countach. After seeing the trials and
tribulations that he goes through, I think I'll stick with the M5.
I've know the guy for several years and his Lambo has been needing a
clutch for the entire time. Apparently the clutch assy is balanced
ON THE CAR. The estimate is $12K - I haven't spent that much in
UPGRADES on the M5 in 4 years!!

High HC is due to misfire as you already know. Something is causing a
misfire at idle. It seems that your ignition is good. What does the O2
sensor do at idle? That will tell you if you are too rich or too lean.
Actually, if you are misfiring badly at idle, the sensor will see O2 and try
to richen the mixture, but with low CO, the mixture cannot be too rich. Try
a cylinder balance test (disconnect one plug at a time) to see if one
cylinder is doing all the missing. Your injectors may be clogged up causing
poor delivery at short pulse widths.

Airbags are effective in only a limited range of crashes but this range
includes be the most common crashes. Wear your seat belt and keep your
airbag. If you have an SUV, be advised that they roll over in 33% of
accidents compared to 8% for cars. NEVER ride/drive an SUV without a
seatbelt. It is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Rollover and
no seat belt means big hurt.

Nope, unless you asked the dealer to replace the clutch.

    2) How should I break this thing in? My dealer says 3K miles.
       Don't go over 3K. I don't think I'm physically capable of that.
*************
I'm not sure why your dealer put those limits on your tranny...I had a new
remanufactured tranny installed on my '95 M3 back in May, one week prior to
going to Road Atlanta! I also had the same break in concerns, but the dealer
said that there is no break in for the tranny (in my situation anyway)! So,
my tranny got no break in. It still shifts quite smoothly and I've done 5
track events since the install in May!!!

    3) When can I put Red <space> Line D4 ATF back into it?

I plan to change my gear box fluid with Red Line MTL before my next track
school. I would guess you could do this anytime you wanted...you may have
been able to get the dealer to install Red Line in your new rebuilt tranny.

    4) Should I not do any autocrosses or driving schools before it's
       properly broken in?
*****************
see above

    5) What did I forget to ask?
The most important thing was to ask the dealer about the clutch wear while
the tranny was out of the car...oh well, hopefully your clutch was ok, as
hopefully they would've called to say it needed to be replaced.
I really would not worry about breaking in the tranny. Unless there truly is
a break in period and my dealer was out to lunch!

Good luck Steven.
