That's not so. It would be true if the other car weighed about a million pounds, but since both cars are going to react in the direction opposite to the collision, the force on each is halved. Remember in your example that the airplane and the ship deck are of vastly differing masses. Picture a steel ball superglued to a 2 foot length of string which you hold in your hand. Now picture two steel balls on strings clacking against each other. (no jokes - it's just too easy. :-) Replace one of the balls with a steel wall. What happens to the ball? It behaves precisely as before. The ball doesn't care whether it's hitting another ball of precisely the same mass, or an immoveable object. I won a coupon for $400 off a set of Pirelli tires from Radial Tire in Silver Spring, MD and went in certain I was going to get a set of P-Zeros for the car. Paul, owner and fellow racer/car enthusiast, strongly recommended the P7000SS (in all season for our area). These tires corrected my gross tramlining problems completely all by themselves (YMMV), were considerably quieter than the Dumflop D40M2s they replaced (they were completely worn out so that contributed), offered a level of wet handling (pumped water like a fire truck) and didn't overly compromise dry handling (of course there's a trade off). Whilst doing all that for me they went farther than they should have, did a few autocrosses, and allowed me to embarrass a bunch of folks around Summit Point in the rain. I'm a (relatively) new driver (i.e., my insurance rates are still way up there...only 8 more months until I get a rate decrease!). I think I probably would've wrapped myself around a tree if I had had any sort of *real* driver's training. Or mayby not. Let me explain: My first car was a Ford Escort GT. Having been a confirmed car nut since about the age of 4 (when I could first identify specific cars on the road), I thought I was the greatest driver who had ever lived. And I also took it upon myself to learn all the kewl driving tricks (shifting without a clutch, going REALLY fast around corners, threshold breaking, etc.). Which at one point almost landed me in a snowy ditch (e-brake turn during a blizzard -- DUH!). Driver training might have made me feel I could safely control my car beyond my true abilities (and street safety limits). On the other hand, I've become a much more conservative driver since my driver's school last spring. I realized that: 1. Most people on the street have no idea what they're doing 2. Traffic goes in at least two (if not four or five) directions on public roads 3. I could get my "fix" on the track, so it was stupid to try and get it at the possible expense of myself or (particularly) others on the street Dunno if I would've taken those lessons away from a driver's school four years ago...
