I found and bought the impossible to find Alpine TR1008 12 disc cd changer. The only changer that works with the infra-red slide head unit. Apparently it's easier for Chester to get lucky than to find these units. The PO indicates that it did work prior to removal. However I can't get it to work. I have 3 identical head units & it does not work with any of them. So I am somewhat confident that it is not the head unit. I have found continuity (is that the correct phrase) in all pins in the cable so I am confident it is not the cable. The problem is that the head unit display gives 4 dashes across. The manual says that this indicates that the changer does not have the 12 disc cartridge installed. The only movement that the changer makes is that it winds the 12 disc cartridge in & also ejects it. It makes no other movement. I called a radio repair shop which advertises in the Roundel. They say they do not work on Alpine changers because Alpine will not sell the parts. Local radio shops say they simply send the changer back to Alpine for repairs. Local BMW dealer said they do the same. Alpine said I MUST return changer to a dealer for repairs. They also said 6-8 weeks for repairs. I am confident, sort a, kind a, that the switch/button which closes when the cd cartridge is installed is the culprit. So the question is: Whadauthink? Do ya know a repair shop that knows more that Alpine's FedEx address Does my diagnosis sound reasonble, or am I a complete doufus. As to the Maryland Auto Show: BMW has two Z-8's. If you fill out an introduction card & show them your license they will let you have a 15 minute test drive. Jus kiddin Highlight of the show was BMW's SAV. They also had a 740 which they left connected to the battery (big mistake). Kids were having great fun reclining the seats while I was seeing if 4 golf bags could really fit in the trunk. Save the money unless you are a serious buyer. There is very little in the Fascinating & Gee Whiz dept. Finally: Someone recently suggested that people would not be buying the big SUV's (Suburban & Excursion) as a fashion statement. A quick look at any Lacrosse field parking lot in Maryland will dispel that thought. While the wider wheel and tire slightly increases the contact patch, the wider wheel also stiffens the tire sidewall. Don't go for all seasons. I run Yoko AVS-is in a similar climate and they work great for me. Surely there are better wet tires, but when it's wet I'm driving slower, if only because of all the other drivers. I break 'em loose routinely in the rain, but only when I'm trying (playing), not when I'm panicking. I don't think the wet traction for these particular tahrs is unreasonable at all. I wouldn't want to see snowflakes with these though... I remember it like it was yesterday when an E32 750 with four guys in it pulled away from me and a friend in his M6 on Interstate 8 between San Diego and Yuma. We slowed down when we saw a car pulling on us, but floored it again when we saw the double kidneys. The 750 passed us when we were going about 110 mph and I told my friend to floor to catch the guys. He said it was on the floor and by the time he lifted at 140 mph the 750 was out of sight. With that said I don't think I will buy one until I have a lot more money. After talking to a lot of BMW mechanics it seems like every one has a few 750 horror stories (with lots related to the HVAC). It seems like an average 750 will cost a thousand or two per year more to own than a similar E32 735. The M30 is not as smooth as the M70, but a 735 will still cruise all day at 130 mph. I don't know if this was based on an exact measurement, but I was told that if you connect all the wires in a 750il end to end they will circle the globe.
