Subject: [uuc] <e36> common problems?

Howdy,

Well, there's a possibility I might betray my fellow E30 companions (sorry
guys) and jump into an E36. Don't worry, I'll still keep the 318i and the
325e but my wife's got her heart set on looking at a '92 325i sedan that's
for sale. I know very little about it other than it's a five speed and they
claim it's low mileage.

I'm very familiar with the common E30 problems and I hunted around a little
for some common E36 problems, but I didn't find much. Does anybody have a
list, or any ideas on what I should look out for?

I think she wants to look at it tomorrow so If you could reply directly to
me, that would be very helpful. I will compile anything I get and post them
to the digest.

As always, thanks much.

Kevin:

I have the Kmacks on my E34 and can get -1.9* on the right and -2.0* on the
left. The caster is not adjustable at full negative settings and is a PITA
to set @ home. I indexed the plates to the "stock" settings of .25* toe in,
what ever Mr. Bentley said for caster and -.7* camber.

This alignment was done by a reputable shop with some recommendations from
the tech. The toe is a compromise but I drive only 1200 track miles a year
and 10000 street miles and toe out although great for turn in stinks (IMHO)
on the street. For track days I just set the plates to full neg camber then
move them back to the indexed position when done. It takes all of 10 min
for the procedure. BTW for me the steering is a little to heavy feeling for
prolonged street driving on full neg camber.

Please let me know what you find with the caster it may be time for me to
try new settings.

Dennis,

Turn your car on and then turn on your heat to full blast and let it run for
a few minutes. You have air bubbles and that is how you get rid of them.
When the car cools down remove coolant cap and top up to full.

Don Cicchetti gave a lengthy comparison of cars to guitars. Just three words
when it comes to sweet guitars: Paul Reed Smith!

Let's also not forget that to an overwhelming majority of the driving
public, things like price, reliability, trade in value, and cupholders are
much more important than how many throttle bodies a car has, or how fast a
lap it can turn at Nurburgring.

I've seen newcomers to the E34 board at bimmer.org get scared away by all
the 'problems' the cars have. I have to remind them that your average Honda
and Toyota owner wouldn't even notice all the little squeaks, squawks, and
rattles that bimwads will spend weeks trying to fix. That's why they call us
enthusiasts.

Assuming this is on an E30 325(?), and not knowing anything about your
suspension setup, i'd suggest around 40 lbs front and rear as a starting
point. The minimum i was able to use when i had 205/55-14 Kumhos
on my 6.5" cross-spoke wheels without the fronts rolling over onto the
sidewalls was 39-40 lbs. Anything less and the fronts would roll over
and blister the outer edges, and this was with a mild street-prepared
suspension setup. Even now with my 225/50-15 V700s and an even
stiffer suspension, i'm still having to run 41-42 lbs up front and a
pound or two lower in the rear. Regardless, i don't think you'd be
able to get away with anything less than 40 lbs. FWIW.

I'm looking to set my 325is up at M3 alignment specs for the street.
Can anyone confirm that the "M-Technic suspension" specs in the
Bentley manual are in fact the M3 specs and not something else ?

If they are not the M3 specs, anyone know what the M3 specs are
for Camber, caster & toe ?

Rusty,

Call Crutchfield, they will be able to tell you a deck that works. If none
are available (probably the case) Look on the web for Zionsville auto sport
in IND. They sell refurbished or used decks. I got one a couple of years
ago from them and it works great.

David, We had a 92 E36 and had no trouble with it except for the ball
joints in the front, common prob. And the M50 (non vanos) motor had bad
ignition coils in 91-92. (some not all) There was a campaign to recall
those from BMW. Most have been replaced by now, but if they haven't they
are not cheap. Have the dealer check the part number and they can tell you.
Our prob was in 96' and the dealer fought us on it (the car was still under
emission warranty at the time) And we had to then go to the region and then
to Vic Doolan himself to correct the prob. I don't think they would fix the
prob this far out unless you know somebody at the dealer well, but make
sure you look into it. While you are looking, I would look into a 93, the
Vanos motor has a lot more torque down low and is much easier to drive in
town.
