Illegal Speed Traps Randy Walters wrote about speed traps in Southern California, to which I'd like to remind the group that "Speed Traps" are illegal in California: <http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=veh&group=40001-41000&file=40800-40808> Law Enforcement may set up "stings" in certain locations, but if you get pulled over you'll usually get off with a warning or cited for something else because a speeding ticket won't hold up in court unless the proper engineering and traffic surveys have been performed within the previous 7-10 years on the location that your were cited for. California has this interesting section of theVehicle Code: > 40804. (a) In any prosecution under this code upon a charge > involving the speed of a vehicle, any officer or other person shall > be incompetent as a witness if the testimony is based upon or > obtained from or by the maintenance or use of a speed trap. If you get cited for speeding anywhere in California, finding the last spped survey for that road is the easiest way to get out of a ticket. Haven driven in heavy handed Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, among other places. I think it's time to petition the legislature of these states to get rid of these "Entrapment" practices. The authorities have enough of a bad rap without having the reputation of "Lying in Wait" to deal with. I don't know if it has anything to do with my back window being tinted at this point, but the reception to my AM radio is terrible. Also, when I turn on the left or right signal light, I can hear it clicking though my radio. Now if I have on FM, I don't hear it. Whats up with that? Thanks for any help I can get, this is really working my nerves:-) Best Regards, Celisa 99 328is ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2094 07:50:50 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re[uuc] Laser or Radar I drive an average of 50-100 miles a day around Metro Atlanta and make 2 trips to Ohio and Florida every year.I'd say 97% of cops use radar. So, I have a fixed budget which needs to include the labor necessary to accomplish these upgrades. I'm leaning toward upgrading the brakes to floating rotors and replacing the pads as well. Also to redo springs, shocks, and sway bars. My questions are: Is this the best bang for the buck given my budget? Other suggestions to stretch the budget? Merits of Eibach Pro-Kit vs. H&R springs? Any other comments or suggestions? By the way, the car is completely stock, has the sport package, with 65,000 miles. I've been a "silent" member on this list for some time now, and I just can't help but share my opinion on SOME of the members here. I think the narrow minded, tunnel visioning, uneducated, "BMW is no.1 and everything else is crap" philosophy some of you take is striking! I'm also a member on the NSX list and this topic is/was also in discussion. Being the owner of both makes, I CAN share unbiased opinions on the cars (like Joe), and I happen to LOVE both makes. You should have read some of the NSX threads on this topic. People there don't jump all over BMW, defending their precious little NSX's and God forbid anything else in this world might have some value! I mean....statements like the NSX is "No BMW equivalent" just goes to show how retarded some people can be. This guy has OBVIOUSLY never driven one... and if he has, needs major help. What is it with some of you? It's almost like you have been brainwashed. If anyone dares make a comparison between BMW and xxxx it's almost like a defense mechanism takes over reducing your unbiased judgement to nil and your IQ to sub 3 digits while uttering the most ridiculous statements to try to make a point. To me...the best 2 auto makers, for VERY different reasons are BMW and Honda. But you'll never see me call Mercedes, Nissan, Lexus, Ferrari etc. inferior. Next time, try explaining *why* you chose BMW, and what makes you happy about owning a BMW, and stop concentrating on picking out so-called defects on other cars. Eric B. A brief procedure follows: After you have removed the caliper and rotor, 1. Remove the grease cap with a screwdriver and hammer. 2. Undent the lock nut. 3. Remove the lock nut with an impact wrench or breaker bar (200+ lb-ft). 30 mm. 4. Pull bearing off with 6" or larger puller. You might have to use a bolt in the spindle as a centering device or something. Use a puller that is too large and you might have to remove the backing plate to allow the jaws to get in around the bearing. The 6" Craftsman worked fine for us. 5. Pull race off with the same puller. 6. Push new bearing on by hammering on 36mm socket on inner race. The bearing came greased and ready to go on. Replace rotor and caliper. Bob pointed out the worn bearing when we were inserting the Bilsteins into the strut. The ABS toothed ring looked rusty and the bearing seemed sticky. No grinding noises though that I could tell. When the bearing was removed the border of the race was seen to be actually breaking off slightly. The earlier subframe bushing tool that I had crafted, with help from Carlos Lopez, from aluminum broke and a new one was made, with help from Steve Shelton, from steel. This one shows no sign of bending. I've posted this procedure before, so I won't go into detail, but we found that excess soap on the bushing prevents it from remaining seated. It was decided that we would use only the minimum necessary soap the next time. Maybe none at all. The old bushings were almost in two pieces. Because of the tools in the trunk, I have not had a chance to engage in spirited driving yet, but I'm sure the handling will have been improved considerably.
