If you have a new job in Northern Italy (like Milano), I would check if it's possible to live in Southern Switzerland (for example Lugano). It's a much nicer place to live than N. Italy and it is only about 30 minutes from Milano. The other great thing is that you can get there a used 1993 or 1994 E36 M3 (286hp) for only 15000 US$. And no luxury tax or BS like that! You might also think about importing a M3 from Switzerland to Italy (don't know what that would cost). I think E36 M3 are very rare in Italy! All the races I run are sprints so wearing out tires and running out of fuel in one race don't come into consideration. Those two factors are _very_ high on the list of concerns for a 12 hour race. I should think to help conserve fuel you'd want a 3.73 or at most 4.10 rear. For sprints I like the Hoosiers but I doubt they'd make a good 12 hour choice. There's almost all new pavement out there. You can get track details at http://www.bsr-inc.com if you thrash around some and can even find a time to get your car out on that track for some testing. I run with Panasport Lights in 14x7 because I'm allowed to in ITS. Again, if you want to try to beat the big mondo-horsepower guys in a 12 hour I'd think some 318 bottle caps with skinny tires that will net you big fuel economy would help. As for pit crew, I don't even know for sure if I'll make it up for this one. If I do I might be looking to work some for the track to pay back all those hours the "regular" SCCA workers put in so I can race. If I get up there you can bet I'll stroll around and say hi to folks. The problem I have with the car is it does not instill the confidence that the E36 does by transferring all the road data. if you can get use to the numbness of it IM sure you can beat an E36 with it, and surprisingly enough I did not notice any lack of power even with a slush box in the 323ci versus my car with the bigger six. I might even consider owning one if someone make a chip for the slush bow and reverse the shifter to down is upshift and up is downshift. and make the shifting more responsive. If you haven't noticed there are almost no manual tranny E46 available. It seems like everyone thought it was a worthwhile upgrade, with such benefits as: increased steering response, less drift in high speed corners, and possibly reduced body roll. It looks like the only slight obstacle for the DIY is getting the nutsert installation tool. Thanks again to everyone who responded. Simple air-changes-per-hour is ok if you are ventilating your bedroom, but for a garage, you need to address the pollution problem. Is it paint thinner? How much? Do you leave your car running while you are tuning it? Do you have a paint spray booth? Do you have a heater or A/C? A lot to figure in, but an easy one, once you set the parameters. (Autosport Perf.) Jay, Ben gave me a really good lead on a shop up in Englewood NJ (off RT 4). It's called Autosport Performace and the guru up there is Don Fields. I had a very obscure problem with my car last week, (actually an emergency) and I called him up and he told me to bring 'er in. In a few minutes he diagnosed the problem. A hour or so later, he walked me through exactly what he had done to remedy the problem and why. He also told me to check back in (in about 1k) to see if everything is still alright. (Just like a doctor) These guys are the best!! He then took me out in my car and this guy can drive! He used to be an instructor... Trust must be earned from me and this shop definatly has mine! They do everything from wheel balancing/oil changes to prepping your car for the race track. They are familiar with UUC as well as other performace parts... See their add in the NJ Chapter flyer (10% off labor for BMWCCA memebers). I left the number in the car...let me know if you want me to run out and get it at lunchtime. - --- Mike Tse 96 328is BL/SS/ERK/RK X'd-Barbarian'd - -Shark Infested & Breathing Easy- ES-DTM BMWCCA NJ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 09:41:06 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: <E46> feels like Honda As this E46 bashing continues, I will continue to say to all: DRIVE A CAR WITH SPORT PACKAGE! One room required the operator to be in the cell with the vehicle (chassis dyno), and I recall one of the engineers saying they had the ventilation set up to provide ten air changes per minute. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 09:01:28 -0500 From: Michael Weishaar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Excellent shop in Nothern NJ! Rob, There isn't much substitution for cc's. As you know the S/C and turbo is a cc multiplier. Oh ya, change the differential. The Euro M5's with the 6 speed had a 3.23:1 differential. A 3.41:1 differential may also provide a torque multiplication that would allow first gear to reach 30mph at around 5500 rpm. After that you would need to just make the 4.0 rev with less effort to take advantage of the new found HP at the rear wheels. I would assume the lower differential gears will not affect the usefulness of the top speed.
