HC and CO become H20 and CO2 when they react in an oxidizing atmosphere.
NOx becomes N2 and O2 when it reacts in a reducing atmosphere. If the fuel
mix is exactly right, all 3 can happen together.

The air pump is good when the engine is cold and the fuel mix is rich. One
hot, the pump is usually not needed.

Bleeding air into the exhaust will create an oxidizing atmosphere in there
and cause NO2 emissions to be very high. Too much air will dilute the
exhaust and all gases, including the CO2 will be too low. Emissions tests
monitor CO2 to detect an exhaust leak.

My guess is a misfire at idle. Uneven injector flow is a suspect, as is
ignition. Check all the ignition components, and try some injector cleaner.

Thought I'd throw in my $0.02...

BMW certainly could be designing nicer-looking cars. *However*, I've
been pretty pleased with the styling on most of the '90s-era cars --
where does that leave BMW to go? At least they're trying something
different, and combating the idea that "all BMWs look alike".

Re. Specific models:

E46: The sedan's grown on me. The coupe was drop-dead gorgeous to begin
with. The M3 looks positively mean.

Z8: Drool... The best-styled BMW in the past two decades, IMHO.

New 7er: Um...not as ugly as I would've guessed from spy photos. I
kinda like it. But I'm not sure about the Volvo-esque rear end
treatment.

New 5er: If it turns out like the Z9, BMW is in trouble!

Subject: Re: [uuc] E46 Brake job

For parts, you are looking at about $50 for each rotor, about $40/per
axle for new regular street pads, and about $11 for new high temp
fluid. More aggressive pads will be a little more expensive (1.5-2X).
SS lines are nice on the track, but not a must - add about $100 or so
for them.

As far a labor goes, it should take about an hour to change just the
pads. Make that 2 hours if you are also changing the rotors. Add
another half hour if they also flush the fluid at the same time. So you
could be looking at up to 3 hours labor being charged, times $80/hr
labor rate, that's about $240.

So your brake job could set you back anywhere between $160 and $700
depending on what exactly you want to get done and who does it.

Or you could DIY in a Saturday afternoon for half the money ;)

I pretty much like all the newish models - basically anything this side of
1990. I like the amenities, I like the styling, blah blah. Am I a true
aficionado? I doubt it. But I'm probably right in the middle of your
average BMW owner's tastes.

Do I like the older BMW's- 2002's etc? Not really. They just look 'old'
to me.

Subject: Re: [uuc] Rotating & unsprung weight - how significant?

The rotating inertial of a disk, rolling on its edge, is 50% of its mass.
If all the mass is concentrated at the outer edge, the rotating inertia is
100% of its mass. A tire and wheel is pretty close to evenly distributed.
The wheel itself has more mass towards the center and will have less than
50% of its mass as rotational.

The 4x rule is completely wrong for wheels and tires. The rule is closer to
1/2 x.

Saving 5 lb through light weight wheels will have the effect of saving 6 or
7 lbs altogether. Saving 5 lb through a lighter tire will have the effect
of saving 8 or 9 lb altogether. Lightweight tires have a greater effect
than lightweight wheels, although the effect is small.

Brake rotors are somewhere in the 1/4 x range.

Now an engine flywheel has far more effect, especially in the lower gears.
Here the effect is close to 30x in first gear and closer to 2x in 5th.
Driveshafts, axles and such all have an effect but are insignificant
compared to engine and flywheel inertia.

Rail guns. 0 to 4000 MPH in < 275 feet.

22-250, (with the right load), 2700 MPH in 36 inches.

Everybody,

While driving back from SIGfest on Monday, I noticed an acrid sulfur smell
when on throttle. It wasn't always perceptible, and I know that other cars
(esp. Japanese) puke out this smell. But i noticed it a lot more often than
usual.

What are possible sources for an odor such as this from the M3? Or did I
just maybe (hopefully) get some funky re-formualted gas in VA, MD or NJ?

Thanks,

Lee

John - the upside of the new group (and it's up and running with members)
is that we know who is administering it (me for the moment.. although I'll
be looking for co-administers..)

If you want to join - check the message at the top of the digest..

It is set, believe it or not - to turn on at 7PSI.. scary isn't it?

Look on the drivers side of the head, way back towards the engine block..
for a wire going into a rubber boot. If you see oil dribbling off the
wire, you've found the pressure sender. Ones from certain models of
VW's are identical (and easy to find at aftermarket parts places..),
take the old one with you to match up the threads..

BTDT on my old 535i..
