Subject: [uuc] RE: Has BMW lost its way

I passed a white E46 M3 going home from work last night, and thought to
myself "they really got that one right" (from the aesthetic aspect, I
haven't had the pleasure of driving one yet). I concur with previous
sentiments that the 740i sport looks great - It's the best looking 7 series
in years. But I say in years because I can't get over my E23. It's
beautiful. The paint isn't as bright as it once was, it has a couple dents
and scratches, but I can (and do) look at it for extended periods of time
just admiring the design. Why don't I feel the same way about an E32 or any
newer model? Where did the character go in BMWs design? Don't get me wrong,
I love all BMWs, but I think post 1988 (except E36 & E46) got much less
"soulful". Or I just might be crazy.
If BMW announced a new design like the CS, or any of the
aerodynamics-be-damned models from the '80s, that would be amazing. I almost
bought an E12 M535i that needed a couple serious repairs just because it was
so beautiful and, well, I'd own an M535i.
The new E60 (or what I've seen of it) is a sick joke. Would someone
please give the people who designed them a fresh sheet of paper and some
dignity?
   Bring back the shark nose.

Subject: [uuc] 88 735i Head gasket repair

Put a new head gasket in the old 735i this week.. Pulled it found a blown
gasket.. Machine shop checked it out, cleaned it, and pronounced it too
tight to do anything to! $100.00- for cleaning and vac check.
$200 for gaskets..What do you think three days of my time is worth(no
comments from the peanut gallery please).
Anyway..put it all back together..him no run good. Idle like s***! Felt
like an ignition problem..could't see an obvious spark plug or wire
problem..new cap and rotor...convinced myself there was a " one tooth off "
timing chain problem..Book sez timing bolts "vertical" I thought this means
parrallel to engine centerline..so that was how I set it..no marks on the
big six cam schprocket! Both Bentley and Haynes say "vertical..Well boys
and girls..these Bimmers are "Slant Sixes" ..and Vertical with the engine in
the car is a few teeth to the right of vertical when you line up with engine
centerline....

So I sez.."okay, I'll try to see if "Vertical" works"..Take it all
apart..Remove timing chain sprocket..guess what..there is no WAY the valves
and the pistons are not going to hit each other with the Bolts "vertical.."
That was an extra 4 hours work..

The book only applies if you have the engine on an engine stand..with the
centerline of the engine perpendicular to the floor!! Both books are
wrong..!!

So I put it all back together.( exactly the way I had it in the first
place).and when I look REAL close at one of the plugs (probly the one I
dropped while back) I notice that the center electrode insulator is broken,
and when you turn the plug over..The insulator slides down over the gap!!!
How that for a mystery problem. The mysterious disappearing gap!!

The good side of this time wasting exercise was that the # six cyl head
bolts took about 10 lbs more torque after the hot run/retorque, and I set
all the valves a little looser , found the ignition /plug problem, replaced
my A/C condenser, fixed a leaky hose, and recharged with R134..an evil "drop
in recharge":... Changed nothing..my compresser is an r-12 unit..the logic
being that if it doesn't last, I'll be replacing the compressor anyway.
Seems to blow almost as cold as the R-12..and I didn't lose $250.00 worth of
freon to find the leak. By the way, Zygmunt, In PA has the best pricing on
A/C condensers..$179.00

The windshield has 0 deductible, and it was cracked, so that was replaced
in my driveway by a glass service.

I have a new Aux fan from auto zone on the new condenser, a new radiator,
new waterpump, new head gasket, dist cap and rotor, and a good running
sled..total cost for all this madness was about $1400.00 in parts...

By the way, my buddy, the dealer mechanic(who I saw in a strip joint, and
invested $20.00 in a "floor dance" with one of the strippers for..) (Ally
for life now!..Money well spent), pointed out that if you leave the intake
manifold in the car..there are about 20 things that don't have to be
disconnected..major time savings..The Fuel injection, the throttle and shift
and cruise cables, assorted wiring harnesses, and the head is a lot easier
to lift!

The conundrum is that I should sell the old girl now that she has 225k on
her..but now she's fixed..how can I sell her!

Dave Leonard
Now if I could just find the short in the power windows of the 325IC.(91
e30).takes out a 30 amp fuse..but so intermittent..about every two
months..anyone have any ideas?

Some day I'm gonna buy a new car, and stop all this juvenile hot rod repair!

Hi Kirk,

So do you guys sell them then? Also, I've heard it mentioned that the DEC
loses a bit of power over stock, any thoughts on this?

Anyway, I'm shopping around and I want to do something within the next month
for sure. Thanks for the info.

Jack,

I have used D.E.C. for many years. The fit is usually very good and the
finish
is o.k. As to weight, anything you put on there other than stock is
lighter.
The D.E.C. unit is not as pretty as the stocker, but who really cares?
Function
over fashion anyday!!! I have been using them on customers cars for quite
some
time. The last one that I replaced was about $300.00 to the customer,
compared
to $2650.00 for the O.E. BMW unit. No extra noise, less weight, and a trunk
load of money left over. How can one go wrong?

I finally put my 28.8 kbps connection on the overnight
grind and downloaded the 28 MB movie.

I would say it and the first one are the best so far.
Very nice and it has the M5.

One question though: Is the Star meant to be Madonna?
It looks like her a lot (teeth, moles, etc.). Also,
they do not give her name in the credits either at the
beginning or the end. OK, I admit I did not catch it,
my fiancee did, but I'm curious.

Everybody,

While driving back from SIGfest on Monday, I noticed an acrid sulfur smell
when on throttle. It wasn't always perceptible, and I know that other cars
(esp. Japanese) puke out this smell. But i noticed it a lot more often than
usual.

What are possible sources for an odor such as this from the M3? Or did I
just maybe (hopefully) get some funky re-formualted gas in VA, MD or NJ?

Thanks,

Lee

The star IS Madonna. Not sure if she is meant to be playing herself.
Allthough I heard of a recent Guy Ritchie interview where he described his
new wife similar to the character in the film. (And he did co-write the
script.)

I've been told that Guy Ritchie, the director of Star, is Madonna's
husband, so it's probably quite likely. I noticed the resemblance, too,
but didn't see her credited.

It's my favorite movie so far too, except for the car jumping. I wish
someone would shoot a driving sequence with rally-style jumping (car
sideways or rotating in the air), instead of these fake-looking car
jumping cliches. Also, was it just me, or was that conscious product
placement in how the ///M gear knob on the shifter was never covered by
the driver's hand?

As work on "restoring" my '91 M5 continues, I've decided I just can't
live without a set of leather-covered Recaro SRDs, so the stock sport
seats are for sale:

Hard to find '91 M5 electric sport seats
========================================

When removed last year, all functions operational; light gray leather;
passenger side leather in good-to-very good condition; driver side
leather in fair condition, with bolster wear (really should be
recovered).

These things are bulky, so I *really* don't want to ship them... NorCal
folks, please. I'm in Santa Clara, can deliver a reasonable distance.
Sorry, no pics at this time. Don't really know what they're worth, so
will throw out a number: $700/OBO.

Please reply directly.

Snipped..

That was my reaction also, although I now have an E39 (not necessarily
for looks, although owning it - the looks grow on you.. :-)

I always liked the looks of the E34.. classy looking sedan.
I owned one so I might be prejudiced.

>Now, my first thought when I saw the E65 was "It looks like a giant

I think without seeing it in person, it's hard to tell. The general
lines are more voluptuous than the E38 series, and it may be a case
of the styling of the M-Coupe, which IMHO never photographs well.

>As I was walking into the office today after lunch, I walked past an
>E39 parked next to an E46. I had walked past the second before I

BTDT, but I've gotten better at it since I own one. Strangely, this
morning I was being tailgated by an E38 (had a slow driver in front
of me), and at first I thought it was another E39, until I noticed
the size of the grilles.

Someone described BMW's styling (the E46, E38, E39) as "same sausage,
different lengths" - which is probably what BMW is trying to get
away from with the E65. Make each car different enough to be instantly
recognizable.

>|E46, Z3, Z8, Z9

Well.. yes, but the classic styling won't meet current safety
standards and they DO look dated. Classic frequently equals
'dated' until there are so few around that they become collectable.

Snip..

>I also think that your list of classic and elegant designs should

I wouldn't include the E38 in 'classic' - perhaps elegant, but very
little IMHO to really make it an eyecatcher.

>I love the looks of my M Coupe, but that was serendipity, not design.

>A friend of mine described it as a "rolling middle finger." ;)

If you look at it from above - the shape resembles certain parts of
the male anatomy :-) I liked the look of my M-Coupe, but can't really
say I was ever 'in-love' with it. From lots of angles it has a unique
and ballsy look, from other angles I used to think "what were they
thinking of..". An M-Coupe is an acquired taste for a lot of us,
but I will admit, it's the first car that got as many comments as
when I owned a '65 XKE roadster (although I never got an 'ugly'
comment on the XKE). Small children and teens seem particularly
to love the coupe styling, passed a school-bus stop every day to
work in mine where a few kids ALWAYS waved and yelled.. can't
say that's happened in the 528i.. :-)

Gonna have to see it in person before I make a judgement.

Certainly if you're happy with what you have - worth keeping it
rolling and not making payments until you find something you
HAVE to have to replace it. No brainer.

No need for nomex.. it's been a civilized discussion so far :-)
