Subject: [uuc] New Website, looking for input.

As part of a class project, I'm supposed to be creating a new website
on "something". Being an E30 driver and having benefitted from
various online sources for repair help (many of which are now dead
and gone), I was considering the possibility of making a simple meat
& potatoes site for E30 maintenance and performance.

To help get this started, I was hoping you guys might spend a little
time thinking about what sort of content you'd like on such a site.
Also, if you have any site you normally visit to look up procedures,
I'd like to hear about them.

Lastly, does anyone know if there are any remaining traces of the old
E30 Network (BEN) page? There were already several procedures on
that page.

Thanks,
Robert

Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes about a friend's non-Sport 528i
possibility:

"The replacement car does not have the Sport Package, but is clean and has
low miles. He's thinking that he would put on some Eibach Pro Kit springs
and Bilstein shocks/struts to get back closer to the Sport Package ride and
handling he had in the previous car. He has the Eibachs on his E30
convertible and likes them. The replacement car already has 17 inch
wheels."

IMHO the Eibach springs and Bilstein struts will give a much firmer ride
than the factory "Sport" tuning, which really isn't that different from
non-Sport. (At least UK-tuned cars are this way - sports suspension is
available as an option so you can say you have sports suspension when you're
in the pub - there's very little in it). Also, cars equipped with Eibachs
Pro-Kits will generally be quite a bit lower, I suspect more for marketing
and looks than real engineering necessity. Your friend may find himself
grounding out if he assumes he has the same clearance as his old
Sport-pack-equipped 5er.

Eibach does sell a set of matched Bilsteins in a kit called Pro-Damper.
These would be better matched to the Eibach springs than off-the-shelf
Bilstein Sports. The Pro-Kit and Pro-Damper combo got a very good review in
Auto Motor und Sport (German mag) a while back. The ground clearance issue
can partly be fixed by fitting thicker spring pads on refit. Also there may
be a "poor road" package for the 5er which can be used to restore some
ground clearance at the front. A look at the ETK will provide an answer.

At 5-6 years old, it may also be worth replacing all the suspension bushes
and other joints - better to do it now with the suspension in bits than in
12 months' time, when the extra stresses brought about by the firmer springs
and shocks cause them to wear out completely.

Dave:

I have used this tool (Harbor Freight) and cannot
recommend against it enough for the E30 springs. It
never really fits right, or grabs enough of the stock
springs to get them to slide easily onto the damper
with cap well into the threaded section, binds often,
etc., etc. Nice idea, but poor execution. My friend
Don Udel has one and now uses the AutoZone/Craftsman
block-end dual threaded rod type compressor.

I am sure the Snap-On one your reference is much
better by way of small differences in implementation.

This is also not at all like the Tokico one I was
referencing earlier. That one had two clam-shell
shaped ends parallel to each other on a threaded rod
in a sleeve like the E30 factory car jack. You turn
the handle and two clam-shell ends approach each
other. Any spring in between is compressed. There is
a slit in the clam end to accommodate the damper rod
and also a small claw to hold the spring 'in'.

For the clamshell type, Harbor Freight has this one -

40 bucks. At least this will give you a great
picture of what he's talking about.

I have the Snap-on version of the same thing, picked
it up for $40 at a used tool store. This is the best
design for struts off-the-car, (other than the
hang-on-the-wall type you'll see at dealers). Too big
to use for anything on the car, though.

My 1987 325iS is makin' me crazy! It wouldn't start
in our recent cold
snap
(no surprise there), and my wife ground the battery
down in
frustration.
Today its a little warmer, and I jump the battery.
Engine turns fine,
plenty of juice, but no fire at all. Finally we have
ignition after I
cranked it for maybe 30 seconds, ran rough for a few
minutes, smoothed
out,
idled okay, then died. When I tried to restart, it
just crank, no
fire.
Fuel? Ignition? Why?

Hey Don,
Maybe they want to accelerate faster or ride two-up! <G> R-bikes
with the same horsepower usually weigh 100 lbs. less, too. But then
we're talking dinosaurs in either case. Duane wants a new bike. And
probably a fast one.

I've recommended K75s to lots of friends just starting out riding but
it's still a bulky bike for the novice maneuvering in tight quarters,
and tall. They couldn't seem to give them away in the land of no
speed limits, but they make a great bike for the U.S. where it did
enjoy sales success. I did own a K-bike, a 1995 K1100RS. Bought it at
two-years-old with 2000 miles on it for $8500, roughly half of what
it sold for loaded when new. Rode it one summer and sold it for
$11,500. That was enough K-bike for me. Glad I was at least able to
profit from the experience.

If you've got to have the latest from BMW, you will pay. Just like
the cars, there is substantial depreciation in the first two years.
Unlike the cars, all the bikes depreciate. While a '95 M3 could have
been the cheapest new car to buy and own for 5 years, an R
bike---and certainly a K---will lose nearly half its value over that
period. There are so many nice BMW's out there with pitifully small
amounts of mileage on them, even 20 years later, that I find
happiness in my four BMW bikes, the most expensive of which was
$2500. I can and do ride anywhere I want with few maintenance
concerns, and with better tire mileage than the new offerings.

But then after selling Porsches for twenty years, I don't have a
desire for a new one of those, either. So maybe it's just me.

AutoZone (if you have one where you live) will loan you their threaded
rod spring compressor tool for free, just leave a deposit and its
refunded when you return the tool. It was $40 deposit when I did the
koni gut-n-strut job. They also have quite a selection of tools that you
may borrow besides spring compressors.

make sure you're using fresh not recirculated air and/or turn on the a/c
(it will dry out the air being blown at the windshield) If you must use
recirculated air you need to turn on the ac or it will fog up. If that
doesn't work I don't know the solution.

Anyone know if the clutch bleed fitting is the same thread pitch and
size as the brake bleeder? Mine is gunked up, but I have a few spare
brake bleeders and could use those. I know it's the same 7mm wrench size.

thanks

If that doesn't work the most likely culprit is the heater core, or the
hoses leading to/from it. Can you smell coolant inside the car? Is there a
film on the inside of the glass?
