Pat has something similar happen to an old pair (I mean really old, back when
they sprayed foam into the boot to form it to your foot) that when dropped
shattered into a bunch of oily little bits.....

but that's not the real story is it?......

"(now ex [girlfriend])" that's the story..... sagacious minds (a cover for
nosey) want to know.

I've never had a problem with clipping my RPM sensor
attachment of my multimeter to the #1 plug wire and
getting my idle measurement.

I go my multimeter from Sears for ~$80 a couple of
years ago. If you don't have one, they do wonders for
electrical testing!! : -)

Seems like it'd be fairly easy to use the "set your cruise control to drive
one mile in exactly one minute, then check your RPM at 60mph in 5th gear"
method...

Or you can hook your car up to an OBD sniffer, MODIC, or DIS and see the
RPM display.

Who is TC's cage fabricator this week?

Their original cages were made by Mark McMahon in Akron. Then there was some
kind of a commercial falling out between them, and the jigs, which TC owned,
were shipped out to ProParts West in California. That was of course when TC
was still ProParts East, which isn't the case any more. Some cages were made
in Cali before that deal fell apart too, then the jigs went to Bimmerhaus in
Colorado, but it appears they actually made few if any.

Now HMS is making a replica, but it may only be a half-cage (roll bar) - I
don't know. But since they are local to you it might be worth a call to Joe
Marko find out.

I checked out James Clay's car (BimmerWorld) during the One Lap stop at IRP
and it certainly has a nicely designed and made cage.

Mark McMahon is still in business for himself in Akron, and his custom cages
are excellent. Jack Money has one in his E30 M3, and I've carefully examined
the one he did for Scott Galaba's E46 M3. The latter was a sheer work of the
fabricator's art, with wonderfully tight fit. I probably have McMahon's
phone number somewhere if you want it.

I just recently visited a website that had great descriptions of procedures required
to federalize a Canadian car as well as a Canadian Euro car (quite different). The
writeups were great:

Any BMW dealer can take care of it for you. BMW has published guidelines, as
it's a very common occurance.

Basically, put a MPH speedo in it.

Once the paperwork is done at the dealer, the car can be titled in the US.

Nothing like the nightmare of bringing one in from Germany.

I should add, this is for a model already available in the US, so don't go
looking for one of those 40 95 M3's with the S50, 'cause that's a whole nuther
story.

You realize what I did, right? Check the Garage.

I actually had 'IV' in this option, to begin with, because
it thought it had an 'older' feel. there was no beer keg
though. <g>

James,
Please don't think I was bad-mouthing your cage - I wasn't. As I mentioned, it's very
clear just from the few website pics that the bar is well built. The individual I
spoke with at your shop was very knowledgable as well.
As I also mentioned, I know virtually nothing. So the placement of those bars seemed
strange to me, when the umpteen other cage pictures I've looked at don't have anything
similar. As to your points, 1) the HANS device usage makes a difference to how I
would perceive that bar, 2) I wasn't able to make out the bend in the B-pillar bar
from the pics, 3) I absolutely buy the coupe-stiffening value of that design, and 4) I
know from my discussions with you guys and from your write-ups on the site (plus your
reputation) that you wouldn't ever do anything to a cage in the interest of appearance
- painting aside, perhaps. :-)
If you have any updated photos of the new cage design, I'd love to see them. Feel
free to contact me off-list if you'd like.
Thanks,
Neil

The blue car is a dedicated track car for a driver who wears a HANS device -
meaning the helmet won't move significantly in an impact. This B pillar bar
is bent on the driver's side to allow plenty of room, even in the case of a
full side impact. The biggest problem in a cage structure is stiffening the
large area where the doors are. We used this double a-pillar design on the
blue car to help with this. Since then, we have updated the design to
something that is a little cleaner looking and also provides significant
rollover/top impact protection. The oddly-placed bars are always there for
a reason - not just thrown in to make the car look cool.
