   Jay;
Both are good inexpensive tires, but don't do well with MXX3s...not
much does.If you can't do 4 tires, the Sumitomos should be closer to the
Michelins in characteristics than the Kumhos, which I like and use.

An additional comment for consideration.

An important variable with Snell rated helmets is their weight. This
affects two important factors: 1) comfort during long runs (and
resulting fatigue), and 2) neck strain/injury during a crash (it acts as
a tethered bowling ball). So compare the weight and go with the
lightest helmet you can afford. Also, look seriously into a neck collar
or some other restraint device (e.g. HANS) to reduce potential neck
injury (which can be very serious in some instances).

One way to think about this is as "head & neck safety system."

Any color or condition. OEM mirrors are my preference, but if you have
aftermarket e39 M5 mirrors that looks OEM, I'll consider them.

BMW being a sportier company than Mercedes must have tuned it less
aggressively, on the MB the damn thing just comes on any time I get on the
pedal hard. I think on the track it may be less of a problem since brake
application is smoother, but on the street when some **hole cuts me off, and
I brake hard the brake assist cuts in and makes me stop in unbelievably
short distances (this is all good) but then I almost always end up getting
real close to rear ended since people follow so close.

E34 wheels fit. (89-95) E39 (97 and later) have a larger
hub diameter and require hub-centering rings. You want an
offset around et20.

In the rear, 225 or wider tires may rub the fender lip,
especially if the car is lowered.

In the front, tires that are too wide or wheels with too
much offset will create clearnance problems with the spring
perch on the inside.

Speaking of neck collars, I really like the Sparco FIA approved neck collar.
Much better than the G-force stuff (yuck)

I just saw a rollover at Thunderhill last Wednesday. The driver literally
walked away from it because her Spec Miata's roll cage includes a main hoop,
which is what a roll bar really is.

Without the rollover protection, she'd have been screwed.

The last E36 I saw roll over at the track had this fascinating new
post-rollover feature where the roof on the passenger side of the car was
touching the roll bar.

Thanks, but I'll take belts and a bar or stock belts and no bar. You can do
what you want.

RR = Range Rover. LR = Land Rover. BMW Sold LR & RR to Ford ~3
years ago when they also sold off the remains of the Austin (not Aston) Rover/
British Leyland empire.

so Ford owns Jag & LR/RR & might end up using engines from Jag in future
LR/RR products.

Roll Royce used to be one big company which included Bentley, Rolls cars
and also Roll Royce airplane turbine engines. then the automotive & aero
parts were split. BMW bought (or took a controlling interest) in the aero
business (Rolls Royce built the Vanos units for the euro 3.0l M3 engine).
Rolls Royce & Bentley cars ran modified versions of the BMW 4.x liter
V8 for a while, but were not that popular with their customers. then, a
a few years ago (3-4, I forget) VW & BMW got into a bidding war/
standoff over who was going to to buy the Bentley & Rolls Royce car
making operations. VW won the prize, but BMW pulled a fast one
& got the rights to the Rolls _name_ but not the cars, so they
spent several years (3 IIRC) putting together the new giant Rolls Royce
that they introduced at the Detroit auto show this past January.

Dennis,

Your argument is specious because your units are arbitrary. The real cost of not
having a full complement of safety equipment appropriate for the conditions and
circustances in the ultimate cost in the event of that "low probability" event.

damn straight. the Sparco collar is _very_ nice.

Jack Money at EMS ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) can get these
for a pretty good price as well I believe.

I dunno about Quaife's specifically, but LSD in general is always a desired
thing in the hot hatch reviews.

the reviews of the Focus RS (with Quaife) have noted that you can feel the diff
working under some conditions, which makes the car more tricky to drive
if you're not prepared for it.

No. You'll find (or that's what I've observed) that most people pretty
much reach a compromise. That is a 4pt belt (like a Schroth) where you
get the benefits of a harness but also has that ASM system. Perhaps
Mark's point is that 3" 5-pt or 6-pt belts are not the safest thing in
a car w/o a rollbar or a cage where a 4pt belt would perhaps be a
better choice.

After driving and riding in cars with proper cages, seats, and
harnesses I think it's crazy to be driving at 10/10ths w/o the proper
safety equipment. I like to putz around at 8/10ths anyway. :-)
