I need a brand new three-wire O2 sensor for my 89 M3. I need it to be
brand new and never having been used. Before I go to the dealer I
thought I might try to keep my money amongst digesters...Anyone?

no way an online site in the US is referring to SMG-I.

any that were imported were imported as parts & retrofitted into cars.

the ~45 cars imported into Canada were 3.0l cars, which never got
SMG-I, which was available only with the later 3.2l engine.

The throttle linkage on my M3 motor is a bit sticky and actually squeaks
when cycled through its travel. I have tried spraying various lubes on the
shafts, springs etc, but all they seem to do is attract more dirt! What is
the correct lube/maintenance procedure for these multi-throttle body M cars?

Thanks,

Lol, do you know what that means or "I was just kidding" means??? as I
stated in the first line???

90% of the people on this board KNOW exactly what the difference is between
an auto and manual M3. The folks just now buying used M3s with no bmw
experience might not, but any auto BMW driver knows about the trans as most
auto BMWs since 86-87 have had those type of controls or something close,
(selecting 3rd for sport mode etc).

As to a newspaper being an authority on terminology, that is really news to
me. Guess that is why I see so many V6 BMWs forsale in the classifieds too.
It really is a inline 6 but since the classified form only listed V6 for the
6 cylinder option, it is a V-inline 6. Lol

Good luck selling it, btw.

Mike

I am sure it is referring to Steptronic type auto transmissions, as dodge,
BMW, porsche and others who are building them nowadays. BTW, E-36 M3
never had any type of steptronic/automanual trans in it beyond the SMG1
offered in europe

Subject: [uuc] <E28> Fenders Definately Need Rolling

Hi All,

Well the wheels are on the car.. and they are sweet. to review.. I just
installed 17x7.5 TSW Blades with Dunlop SP Sport 2000E 225 45ZR17's on the
car (85 535i) all the way around. the fronts are fine, but the rears rub
when I go over a dip. Now I am not sure if my rear springs are sagging or
not, but I need to get the fenders rolled cause they are rubbing.. So far I
have been given a die grinder solution, along with a baseball bat solution.
I would rather not cut the sheet metal on the car, and the bat solution is a
bit hard to picture. The gap between the tire and the fender will definatly
not accomodate a bat's width, so I would assume you need to have the car
jacked up, and in that case, how do you get the car to roll back and forth
if there is a jack underneath it. I would think that you would have to
lower the car, however wouldnt the bat and up creasing the fender badly as
soos as you drop the car?

Anyone with further info, please let me know
Cheers

Wait a second here. I've only been able to give a cursory read to these emails
regarding some sort of automatic machine controlled transmission. Do you mean to say
that someone came up with a way for a car to shift itself. I have got to tell my
parents about this one. I think this will finally get them to give up the Studebaker.

You don't have to use a baseball bat, or if you do, you don't have to roll the
car, just turn the wheel.

Regardless, what you need is a fender roller. A tool built specifically to
help gently fold over that lip of steel that's causing your problem.

Hmmm, wonder if you could rent one of those things,
somewhere?.......................

I suspect the higher cornering forces generated by the E46 M3 have as much
to do with it as anything. I wonder whether the M3 CSL has a proper
dry-sump system? Despite the popular opinion that the S5x engine is at the
end of its development, BMW managed to squeeze out a bit more power (17 bhp)
and a lot more performance (by ditching ~260 lb of weight). 360 bhp (DIN)
out of 3.2 long-stroke litres is quite an achievement, assuming the CSL
remains reliable.

Jack <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes, quoting Brian:

>"I believe the intent is to let those who may not know, (Mike?) that the M3
>auto transmission is specifically designed with a manual shift mode."

The 4-speed GM autoboxes fitted to non-M E36 3ers sold outside of NA also
have this E-S-M (or E-S-*) three-way feature. S and M are obvious, if you
see what I mean, the E is for Economy, and the * is supposed to be a
snowflake. I have absolutely no idea why BMW NA chose to specify the
different A-M switch on most of its cars, although note that the sunken
nature of the E-S-M switch allowed a lot more dust and detritus to collect,
requiring regular cleaning out to prevent the switch gumming up. Did the
short-lived Canada-only E36 320i have this E-S-* feature?

"Will it shift automatically for you at redline or will it bounce
off the rev limiter? Early automanuals would shift automatically for
you...not sure if they still do that or not."

If the lever is in 'D', the car will shift up at the redline with the switch
in 'E' or 'S' at full throttle. At part-throttle the gearbox will delay
upshifts, and downshift more promptly, in 'S' (which is just like selecting
'3' with the lever in cars featuring the A-M switch). Position 'S' also
locks out top gear until you hit the redline in 3rd, at which point it will
shift up (assuming the selector lever is in 'D', otherwise it will hit the
rev limiter). In fact if you leave the selector lever in any lower
position, the car will not shift beyond that gear during acceleration,
eventually hitting the rev limiter in the selected gear. Switch position
'M' allows the car to start in 2nd gear from a rest and shift up to 3rd very
quickly, where it stays. Good for snow and ice.

The only extra functionality afforded by the E-S-M switch is that lower gear
positions can be selected with the gearbox brain still in Economy mode.
Sports mode has to be selected explicitly.

I noticed that the more recent Steptronic transmissions will absolutely not
let you hit the rev limiter in any gear, shifting up even when you had
selected a lower gear using the controller (one can hardly call it a lever
in the traditional sense). The difference, I guess, is that with the modern
Steptronic system you select a lower gear using the software, but the older
PRND432 system allows you to select a gear using the hardware (a cable).

Anyone remember the Sport-o-matic available on early '70s 911s?
