Subject: [uuc] Cracked Windshield repair and/or replacement options

The windshield on my 1999 740i Sport took a hit from a stone yesterday and
now sports a small crack in it. The crack is roughly a three pointed star
about 1/3 to 1/2 inch in diameter. It does not appear to go all the way
through the windshield.

The windshield also has multiple other small chips in it.

I would like to draw on the collective wisdom and experience of the UUC
Digest with the following questions. As is stands, the chip is no big deal,
but if it starts to spread, it could be problem. I drive the car year round
and our winters can get very cold here in Ohio (my thought is that the very
cold temps plus bumps in the road may lead it to spread).

1) The crack is not in my line of sight (it is on the drivers side, but
relatively low). I have heard of procedures where cracks are "repaired".
Any experiences/opinions on these?

2) If I end up getting the windshield replaced, curious to hear your
thoughts/opinions/experiences in the following areas:
    A) Which windshields (manufacturer) seem to offer the best fit, seal,
and optics?
    B) Any particular outfits to avoid in terms of replacement
    C) Of those who have had them replaced, any problems with wind noise
and/or water leakage?
    D) BMW started providing UV blocking windshields on the E38. I am not
sure if my car currently has one or not, what has been your experience with
such windshields in terms of clarity and ability to use a Valentine V1?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

Ouch harsh Neil....harsh. My Grattan one is actually full of Redline fluid
which relagates it to garage duty on cold days....

I actually liked the Putnam one we just got, or actually I liked the girl
who
designed the shirt from Putnam, I confuse the two. ;-)

Larry-

When I purchased my '90 M3 a couple of months ago, I got in touch with
Trusty Transport www.trustytransport.com on the recommendation of
someone else that had used them. They picked the car up in Virginia on a
Friday and brought it to me in Mississippi later that next day. My price
was $595, which I thought was very reasonable.

No relation, just a happy customer!

I need to find a company to ship my 330i from Boston to Philly. I got a
great deal on the car so I'd be willing to pay a little more for a
company with a good reputation.

Thanks,

Not sure either but if the supercharger/boost remains stock I don't think
it will stand a chance.

Unless someone develops an excellent stock class legal suspension for the
Cooper it's not going to happen, not for a couple of years at least. Just
per stock class rules you can probably take 100 lbs out of that car with
race
seats and removing a/c components but I don't know what the min. weight is.

I love the Cooper S it has one of the best stock suspensions that I've ever
experienced,
the brakes are outstanding much better than my E30 and I bet it's because
of the superior ABS system. With sticky tires and aggressive race pads you
should
be outbraking just about everyone on the track. I think perhaps the
inability
to put down all that power in a corner is perhaps the main reason that I
won't be
able to beat a JS E30 M3.

Subject: [uuc] E36 AC service

Hello group,

I've got a '94 325i with AC that is marginal. It works well initially,
but on long drives in the hotter weather we've been having it loses it's
effectiveness after driving for awhile. I'm just thinking of a recharge
at this point, since it's been 3 years since I bought the car and had
the AC repaired.

I know the system uses the 134a refrigerant, and I see kits out there
for recharging using a pressure gauge and not evacuating the system.
The Bentley, however, says the system must be emptied and recharged with
the correct amount of refrigerant & oil. And, of course, it says you
will go directly to jail if you attempt to empty the system without the
proper credentials and recovery equipment.

Can the system be recharged just by pressure without emptying first? Is
there something I should check before I consider a recharge? Are the
warnings about recovery equipment really only relevant to the old freon
systems? For no good reason, I've wondered if I have a problem with the
evaporator drain, causing the unit to freeze up and exhibit my problem.
I must have read something like this once, as I don't have enough
knowledge myself to concoct this theory. Is it a good one? Where would
I find the drain?

Thanks for any advice.

Does anyone know of a good place to get a set of Toyos?

I looked at a few places, in particular Tires-n-Parts in NC seemed to have one of the
better prices on them. Has anyone here ever dealt with them?

Thanks,

Bora says:

<< I think a JS mini cooper or a JP mini cooper will give the E30 M3 a run
for the
money and probably be faster than an E36 325/JP.>>

I will be very surprised if this car can run with an E30 M3....in either
class. The biggest problem that I see is that it is not allowed enough mods
to make it competitive.

Since it's supercharged the only way to increase boost is with a
pulley....and this is illegal in prepared (obviously it will be illegal in
stock). From what I hear, and I'm certainly no expert on the subject, there
are a lot of engine mods otherwise...at least one ones that would be legal.
The E30 M3 has A LOT of potential, even limited by the rules.

I guess it's possible after some development work is done (say over the next
2 years) but I think it will be a shocking day when I'm fighting off a MINI,
especially in Prepared!

We'll see I guess!

There's a plastic cover plate that hides the plug wires on
the valve cover, secured in place with two plastic screw-like
fasteners. I need one of those fasteners. The dealer says
they're not available separately, only as a unit including
the plate for about US$20.

Might anybody have one of these kicking around in a dusty
bin?

The car is a 1991 318is, although I think the M42 as used in
the E36 is probably the same in this regard.

Thanks.

Steve

You insurance should take care of patching it for free. Rather than wait
until you have a large crack and have to replace the whole thing - most
insurance companies will patch it for free - no deductible. They will
usually send someone out to your work/home to do it as well.

I would try that first, and see how it goes.

I have used McNutt 3 times and was very pleased with the price and service.

I have recommended them to several folks and never had a complaint back.

Funny you say that, a JP Cooper S already won its class in an enduro

Steve's original inquiry was with regard to replacement glass lens (not the entire
unit) for an E36. Andy is talking about headlights for an E30 if I was to guess.
