would the *short throw shifter* be called a *short shift kit* or a *short

I'd agree that it looks neater than the Z3, but I don't like the round
thingy on the side (among many other little things I don't like).

Habberstad Mini (NY 631 418 3251) is advertising 8 weeks for custom
orders at MSRP. (Autoweek, 6/23/03).

No affiliation, YMMV, yada yada yada...

The M44 was introduced in MY 1996 with the new filter. A few late year
1995's with the M42 also had the new filter.

Jack <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes about SMG-equipped cars:

"It may be too much but you could try getting a pedal set for an automatic
transmissioned vehicle. Those kits typically come with a wider brake pedal.
This may or may not meet your needs. And naturally, the list owner Rob of
UUC Motorwerks has pedal kits which are very nice indeed!"

Dunno why, but while the SMGII system in the M3 features a normal "manual"
brake pedal in the usual position, the common-or-garden SMG (nee SSG)system
in the 3s has a regular "automatic" brake pedal. Don't know what size it is
in the Z though (Norman?).

I note that some other cars - VW/Audi and Mercedes, notably - now feature
engine cut-outs when the brake pedal is depressed. Left-foot braking (where
throttle is also applied) is therefore pointless in these cars.

Subject: Re: [uuc] I have driven the future

I'm gonna have to disagree with the SMG being the future thing.
perhaps they have improved on the SMG II system. ( I didn't get to drive a
Z3 with it at the breast cancer drive). but when I drove an M3 with SMG II a
few months ago i didn't like it. well, the car was decent, but the shifting
wasn't. (and I much preferred the '03 M5 I drove a month or so later.) the
SMG system was harsh. the settings for upshifts seem to be either slow but
harsh or fast and painful. I tried *keep your foot planted while shifting*,
*part throttle while shifting*, *even less part throttle while shifting*,
and *complete lift while shifting*. automatic mode wasn't too smooth either.
on a positive note, downsifts were nice. could be smoother, but close
enough. I did manage to fool it once though. hit the downshift lever while
hard on the brakes, just as I let off them to turn in. it downshifted in the
transition period of the suspension, front still loaded from the braking. I
think the computer thought the car would be continuing to brake at that
rate. it wasn't too bad, but still enough to make the DSC light flash.
barely felt the rear squirm.

I can't argue with the numbers though. yes it is faster than what a person
can do with a lever. but for a street car, that extra speed of shifting
coming at the price of comfort of shifting? no thanks. give me 3 more hp to
make up for the few thousandths of a second I lost while shifting and we'll
call it even.

speaking of DSC and cool BMW technology (the future?), the DSC in the new M
cars is amazing. might be the same in the other cars too for all I know, but
i havn't driven many of those on dry roads. (was raining during the susan g
komen thing.) anyway, its nowhere near as intrusive as it used to be. I
didn't really realize how good it was until I drove the M5 with it off. dad
turned it off when he got out without me noticing. imagine my embarassment
when I got the car sideways with a salesman in the passenger seat, and my
dad and grandmother in the back seat. a lot more grunt at low RPM in second
gear than I was expecting. I can say that the M5 is very well balanced
though. was brought back in line easily and gently. in terms of the "feel"
and "balance" it was quite similar to my E34. just gobs more torque and
better brakes. oh, and an extra gear.

this is an unfortunate thing. its a *safety issue* so that if you hit the
brakes in a panic and forget to take your foot off the throttle... yada yada
yada.
can't be turned off even with vag com in the vw/audi. its built in to the
ECU. worst part is its not just while on the brakes, it does this for a few
seconds. (3 I think.) on the VW's, its something like if you are on the
brakes and then add throttle, you are ok. but if you are on the gas, and
then get on the brakes too, it gets upset.
Do the new BMW's do this?

And for what it is worth, I tried to install ZKW Elipsoid glass
lenses since BMP Design said they are interchangable. Well I found
out they are not. At least not with my set.

Bosch snaps in on the top and bottom.
ZKW snap in on the sides.
Don't know about Hella.

So now I have a set of Bosch lenses on order from BMW for $94.40 with
discount and need to return the ZKWs. I've also learned that the ZKWs
are much more common.

I don't have any, but they are the same on an E36 and on a Z3 with the
four cylinder.

Now that's funny...I also have a '98 e36 M3 coupe w no keyless entry and
about 6 months ago the trunk lock stopped working properly while all other
locks worked perfectly. I didn't really get around fixing yet. The day
before yesterday (first day w 95 degrees in NY) the driver door lock stopped
working for a few hours. No fix yet but I just thought I share to make you
feel you are not the only one :)

I'll let you know when I get around fixing it.

Hello,
I've been lurking awhile, but this my first post here. Got an interesting
question. Ever since i bought my car (98 m3 coupe), I'm unable to
lock/unlock the car from the passenger door. There is no keyless entry, and
it works perfectly from the driver's door, and trunk. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Subject: [uuc] E28 list + rear window lift

The most knowledgeable group of E28 guys is on the M535i.org list.
Currently they tend toward silent lurking, because so much incredible
information got shared a couple years ago that everyone already knows
everything. Ok so that's a bit of an overstatement. But ask a question
and you'll get great info.

A few weeks ago I removed the right rear window regulator to clean it up
since it was running very slowly, binding in old filthy grease on the
tracks. Since reinstalling, it runs great, but twice now it has moved
too low due to bumps in the roads when driving with it open. The
actuator arm follower gets into the track insert opening, and won't
slide back along the track to raise the window.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening, or should I just kludge a
screw through the track to block the follower from moving that far
forward?
