I have found a rebuilt head to replace mine. Nothing wrong with mine that a
refresh wouldn't fix, but the other is all new parts- cam, rockers, guides.
I wondered if anyone could offer advice on the best way to have the seller
ship the (complete) head. My initial guess is that UPS would be pricey
based on weight.

Roland

Hey Roland-

So, fill me in on how the head removal process went. What did you find
wrong, and how much is the replacement head you found?

...well, GM or ZF, strictly speaking.

My car has this irritating habit of preventing selection of a drive gear
unless one's foot is firmly on the brake. While I understand the need to
provide a safety mechanism for some (specifically people who think you
should be pressing the *accelerator* when selecting a gear whilst stationary
in traffic), I dislike it. My last car didn't have it, there's no law
requiring it here, and personally I quite like being able to select D with
the handbrake still applied, as and when.

Is there any way of removing this shiftlock without upsetting the car's
brain (the interlock I'm not so bothered with)?

Also I have noticed that my brake lights (E46 sedan, auto, 2003 build) do
not come on when the brake pedal is slightly depressed, only after the brake
pedal is pressed about an inch - at which point some braking force is
already being applied. Anyone else (with any BMW, not just E46) notice
this?

I did this to my E34 540iA, by upgrading the T-handle gear selector to
an E39 style pistol grip selector. The solenoid that disengages from the
selector shaft when the brake pedal is pressed has no way to engage the
new shaft, so brake pedal lockout is disabled.

I'm not familiar w/ the E46 but if the approach is similar you could
probably acheive the same thing w/o swapping shafts by dismounting the
solenoid. Unplugging it won't work, because its unenergized position is
extended (gearshift locked). --SC

They ship fedex ground fine and I have used Greyhound before to and from

Subject: [uuc] <E28> Will E34 M30 Head fit on E28 M30 Engine? Advantages?
Availability? Cost?

Hi All,

I am wondering about the possibility of picking up another head for my M30
engine in my 85 E28 535i. Thinking maybe while I have it kicking around I
can do some mods (port/polish, valves, etc) and swap the old one out, and
thought maybe a head out of an E34 model 535i. might be a better head..

Or are they the same head? (Alloys or compounds, ports, valves etc.)

Are there any advantages to doing this (if so what are they) ? Is this even
possible?

What should I look for to make sure I have a good example. Anything to look
for that would point out telltale gremlins?

Does anyone out there have one for sale?

Please let me know.. all replies appreciated..

Cheers

Subject: [uuc] Cold Surging and Hot Idle power problems

I am having some problems with my 96 318ti with 5 speed. I have noticed
this for awhile, but seems to be worsening. Currently it is about 75 to 80
degrees in the morning when I start up and my engine seems to be surging or
pulsing when I am driving it until it warms up. After warm it is fine.

Then, after I drive the 30 miles of mostly highway driving, I have the other
problem. I come off the ramp and usually have to stop or almost stop at the
bottom of a hill. usually I have no problem pulling off. Then I usually go
a block and have to stop again on a hill, and when I pull off it is usually
fine, but will some times do what usually happens at the next light. At the
next light is when it usually gets bad. When I go to pull off it is like
the clutch is too touchy or the engine is not making power...I think it is
the engine. It can be a real problem keeping it running and frequently
stalls. It is like it is idling fine, but there is no power. If it does
not happen there it usually happens when I make the next stop in my parking
deck. It is a real pain.

Only other thing I have noticed is that sometimes, especially with the AC
running that my idle will wander a bit, maybe 100 rpm. The other thing is
that when coming to a stop, again usually with the AC, and I push the clutch
in the idle will drop very low and pop back up.

Any ideas Ladies and Gentlemen will be gladly considered and checked into.
Oh, it has about 58,000 miles on it and besides this is running well.

Thanks,
David

GT3 isn't a bad place for practicing LFB either......especially on the rally

Subject: [uuc] What are the best lease rates on a 2003 X5? Experience with ML35 0's?

My wife and I stopped into a local BMW dealer last night and decided to
lease an X5 for her. Well, we stood at the receptionists desk for 6
minutes without anyone saying a word to us (no receptionist at the desk).
Five CA's walked past us and didn't say anything. My wife and I decided
that if this is the type of service we get before we even buy the car, how
good will it be after? We decided to leave the dealership and again we
passed 2 CA's on the way out. No one said a word to us. I really like the
X5 but this was horrible.

There is a MB dealer about 3 miles down the road so on the way home we
decided to stop in to just to compare the ML. We were greeted right away
and had a sales person to help us in about 5 minutes. The receptionist and
everyone that walked past us were very friendly and offered to get us
something to drink. Are the new ML's that bad? After looking at the 2003
ML350 it looks like a very nice car for the money. The CA offered us $2000
under MSRP for the car (there were about 30 of them on the lot). So with
$2000 down I was able to get the lease payment down to $445 per month. The
car had (power seats, leather, some other stuff, Sunroof package, heated
seats)That seems really cheap for a 2003 MB and if there after purchase
service is anything like their prepurchase service then the deal seems even
better. I know that the early ones had some (many) problems but after 7
years I would think that they would have got this car nailed down. I told
my wife that they will probably change the body in the next year or two but
doesn't seem to mind.

So, my problem is. Is it possible to lease an X5 for anywhere near this
price? The only options that she wants are (leather, moonroof, heated
seats, auto). I am able to get $2000 off MSRP from a dealer in North Jersey
and I would get a $1000 rebate from BMWCCA on a new lease. Any suggestions?

Larry

wonder what's extra on the DVD? Please share once you get a chance to

Not bad, it's July 3rd and I just pulled my July Roundel out of the
mailbox. Even better, the long-promised BMWFilms DVD was included
inside! This DVD appears to contain the five films from the first DVD
as well as the three new ones (Hostage, Ticker, Beat the Devil).

Must .. keep .. working... Cannot .. watch .. DVD...
