Subject: [uuc] Can't start E38 740iL

A good friend with a '95 740iL came over yesterday. While I was hard-wiring
a V1 in another friend's car, this guy tried to troubleshoot his non-working
horn.

We all went inside to take a Halo break, but my friend mistakenly left the
ignition on -- engine off, but ignition on. Three hours later, the battery
was DEAD.

Hooked up a charger, let it run an hour, but no luck. Tried jumping it from
my 740, but no luck there either.

The battery definitely has enough juice, I think, but the starter doesn't
even turn over. Not even a click. I checked to make sure that the
transmission was in Park (tried both Park and Neutral), and made sure to
step on the brake. Nothing. Everything works EXCEPT the starter.

Tried arming and disarming the alarm, using the remote and manually. Tried
disconnecting the battery, waiting five minutes, then reconnecting. No
luck. It just refuses to turn over.

ANY suggestions?

Much appreciated,

I would just like to add. The ZF 4HP22 is a good transmission and with
proper maintance, can easily outlast the car. My family has owned about 6
vehicles that had the 4hp22 transmission in it and never ONCE did we have a
problem. I bought a used 87 535i automatic with the 4hp22 with 150k miles
on it, drove it for another very hard 150k miles. Not a single problem
out of it ever. I currently have a 88 325i automatic 4hp22 with about 180k
miles on it. original transmission and it works perfectly. In the E30
application, they are actually quite good, as they are not remotely stressed
by the small block 6.

On the other hand

My parents have a 94 325i GM turbohydromatic 4 spd that expired right at
110k miles. It was clean on the inside and failed due to a plastic washer
which became brittle and broke. allowing metal shaft to wear the metal
housing to the point of not being able to fix it.

My parents 97 528i GM auto is starting to act up really bad aswell. Slips
for the first 5 mins in the morning, shifts very hard, I would say it is
about to give up.

So from my view point, the ZF4HP22 is a damn good transmission and the
newer GM turbohdyromaticrap is not a transmission you want to own.

good luck

Yes, but it's something to watch out for, right? Especially if youve not
owned the car since new.

Sure Kevin, just torch the whole interior. That will pretty much take care
of any previous smells.

Or you could try replacing all the seats, door panels, carpets and
headliner.

Tell him to go home and get another key.

EWS may have gone out of synch with the dead battery, because the key was
on.

Even another key may not do it, he may need to get the DME and EWS "aligned"
which takes a Modic or GT-1 dealer computer.

Speaking of Range Rover, Ford threw a bunch of money on the table to run a
ride-and-drive for them up at the Sonoma Mission Inn over this past
weekend. There were enough non-motoring activities that the spouse thought
it was the best ride-and-drive she's been to yet.

Of course, there's a whole lot of BMW in those Fords, right down to the
M62TU under the hood.

I didn't pick up on one point until another attendee mentioned it - when
did BMW screw up the Steptronic shifter by making pull-back an upshift?
The Rover's Step is still pull-back-to-downshift, and it feels more normal.

Otherwise, it works fine, feels pretty heavy, goes over rocks and through
holes just fine, the one I drove had a rattle in the back end (not sure how
long it's been doing these ride-and-drives, though) and one that I rode in
had some wrinkles in the headliner.

According to some press comments, Ford management is so ticked off at the
LR workforce for blocking efforts to get them out of their quality pit that
some are suggesting shutting down manufacture at Solihull and moving the
whole thing to Jag facilities.

Have any of you had experience with www.aaarims.com or
www.thewheelexchange.com ?
What about "original equipment replica" wheels? They are 1/2 the price of
official BMW wheels.
I am looking for extra wheels for a 2003 330i, preferably BMW Style 68 which
comes with the Sports Package.

BMW changed the steptronic directions with the introduction of SMG, which is
pull back to upshift, push forward to downshift.

Funny, it's obviously a personality thing, because I believe that's the way
it should be, while Kathy agrees with you. It took her some time to get used
to the SMG in her M3 because she felt it was "backwards".

What? how is it screwd up? pull back should always be upshift. Unfortunately
its not that way on any of the VW/audi stuff currently, which is one of the
things that bothers me when driving the Passat W8. (gauges are reversed too.
speedo and tach are swapped, as are fuel level and coolant temp.) I'm glad
BMW finally fixed it.
BMW finally caught on to what every race car gearbox manufacurer was already
doing. when you are accelerating its easier to pull back on the lever, when
braking its easier to push forward. you're not going against the forces
acting on your body that way. probably not a big deal in a streat car, but
in a race car that does 2+Gs worth of acceleration, and peaks just past 5G's
when braking, that can make a huge difference in driver fatigue.

It would be the same as a Euro E28 M5 and nothing else. It would be much
bigger in diameter than a regular 5 or 6 series.

But that might not get the stuff inside the vents, and under the dash,
which requires replacement of the entire HVAC system.

Seriously, I bought a car with this problem once and I asked a dealer to
recommend a detail shop specifically for this. I took it to the detail
shop they sent me to, and explained the problem. They cleaned and
shampooed the entire interior - seats, carpets, headliner, everything. I
threw away the floormats. I had them NOT use any of the "air fresheners"
as they just mask the problem. This eliminated 99.9% of the smoke smell -
and I have a pretty fine nose for it. On their recommendation, for the
next few weeks, I left the car parked in the sun with the windows down and
sunroof open (weather permitting). It was probably a couple of months
before I would no longer caught the occasional whiff, but I was very
satisfied with the results, and I got a great deal on the offending vehicle
because of the smoke.

I'd hesitate to do it again unless I just had to have the particular car,
but it can be done successfully.
