Auto Motor und Sport reported on the Shell gas which purports to reduce engine
friction.... even they claim a very small benefit (1% on avg.).

The interesting thing was that it was part of a bigger campaign to introduce
100+ octane grades into the Euro market.
Then in this weekend's segment was a segment about some synthesized fuels which
are optimized for power, economy, and emissions. Of course the issue of cost was
not covered.

If the radio is in European mode, the code should be 5 digits. 4 digits if
it's in US mode.

Not sure about the European mode, but you don't push the > button after
entering the code when in US mode.

I know this was a discussion topic a long time ago (I think on Welty's forum) so
here's a refresher for the racer's looking for a possible weight savings (if
allowed).

Which also raises another question - if fitting one of these requires some
persuasion, is the resulting alignment change significant? It seems like
you'd lose at least some effective negative camber, and not necessarily
with any symmetry. I have a Sparco bar sitting and waiting for
installation, with the bolt holes only slightly off (less than 1/4").

Don't have the numbers, but you can also use the rebuild kit for basically
any bosch injector of that type. example would be going to autozone or the
likes and getting the injector rebuild kit for a mustang. each *kit* does
one injector, and the kits are around $5 a piece I think, and comes with new
o-rings and a new pintle cap.

Subject: [uuc] NEWSFLASH: E28 Driver Drives E36 M3!

UUCers,

This weekend, I made another trip to the Dallas-Fort
Worth area. I typically make a trip or two out that
way from Loozeeyanna every three months or so.

This weekend was not unlike the rest where I stayed
with a great friend of mine and was treated to vintage
BMWs numbering well into the double digits (15 seems
like a good rough estimate off the top of my head).

Anyway, the point of this submission was to mention
the opportunity I got to drive an e36 M3. The '99 M3
2-door was recently purchased by a friend of mine.
It's got a Dinan Stage 1 engine setup, Z3 1.9 (I
think) shifter, and is otherwise stock.

First impression: when he pulled up, I was amazed at
how gorgeous the car is in person. The stance is just
right, the spoilers really add to it, and the clear
turn signals really go well with the look of the
silver car. The meats in the rear look seriously mean
protruding from the fender like that.

Next, he popped the hood, and I got to see what it
looks like to have an engine that you can't stand next
to in your engine bay! Hmm, maybe I'm just used to my
e28. There's not much to the M3's engine bay. Just a
standard ol' engine with an ///M Power engine cover.

We then got in (me behind the wheel), and I got to
take the car for a spin (no, not literally). The
black leather Vader seats were like Heaven. Oh my
GOSH those things are comfortable. Now I know what my
back's missing when sitting in my e28's 90s-vintage
cloth Recaro (original owner's doing).

The shifter location is a bit different from the e28.
It's not necessarily worse; just different. The
steering wheel is close at hand, very comfortable, and
of course the gauges are great to read. All in all,
the interior is great, very very comfortable, but it's
a tad claustraphobic for a diehard e28 driver like
myself.

On to the drive. . .

Only 15 minutes before, I had taken my tuned up Euro
'85 535i out for a spin. I had just finished doing an
oil change (1950 miles since the one before), fuel and
air filter change, and putting new spark plugs in (I
replaced the incorrect WR9LS plugs with the
correct-for-Euro-535i W8DC plugs).

With Stahl headers and a chip, I would think that my
535i's power is boosted from 218 HP stock to about 225
or so. Not too much but maybe a touch more than
stock. I took my car out and really wrung it out
well. I redlined it in the first three gears -- with
a 3.07 diff, that translates to a few MPH over 100 --
and really got to enjoy the suspension and the
seemingly-everywhere torque band.

Back to the M3. . .

Driving out of the subdivision toward the open road, I
noticed how soft and supple the suspension was and how
smooth engine was. Pulling from about 20 or 30 MPH in
4th gear, the engine felt like it had a good amount of
torque, even down low like that.

When we got up to the four-lane divided highway, I
made a right turn at the stop light and immediately
jumped on it. As I was concentrating on getting into
the left lane to go around a Ford Focus, I figured I
was at about 3k or 4k. The moment I looked down, I
hit the rev limiter at about 7 grand. Holy crap this
thing pulls!

I took it up to about 80 or so before I decided that
was enough fun for me for the day. I then shifted
into 5th gear and enjoyed the sweet, smooth ride.

The suspension is just right, and I mean just right.
Going over bumps, it is SO much smoother than my e28
with stock springs and Bilstein Comfort shocks. My
friend the owner of the M3 says that the car just
corners like it's on rails, and I have no reason to
disbelieve him.

I would turn the wheel even the slightest bit, and the
car would immediately respond, very much unlike any
e28 I've ever driven, which all seem to be inflicted
with some kind of dead-on-center feel (which isn't
THAT bad if you're cruising at 90 - 100 MPH).

Accelerating away from the last stop light at about
half-throttle and shifting mid-way into the rev range,
I tried a 3 - 4 shift and accidentally put it into
2nd. I hear this is common, or maybe that's the new
e46 M3? A lot of it was just my inexperience with the
shift setup and of course me not paying as much
attention to shifting as I should. I guess I'm used
to the stock shifter on my e28. Luckily, I was quick
enough on the clutch to stop it even before it hit
5000. No big deal, but it could've been pretty bad if
I had shifted at redline and was in more of a hurry
than I was.

Conclusion. . .

All in all, the E36 M3 that I drove was just a true
dream. The power seemed seemless and much more
plentiful than my 535i, although that could've been
the short gearing of the M3's close-ratio transmission
more than its 30HP advantage over my 535i. The M3 has
~255 HP with the Dinan setup, a close-ratio tranny,
and a 3.15 diff (I think) whereas my 535i has ~225 HP,
stock overdrive transmission, and stock 3.07 diff.

The suspension is wonderful, interior wonderful,
everything. What a car! This is truly an amazing
e-ticket ride!

I told my friend it was about time for some forced
induction, and he mentioned Dinan had a supercharger
kit available for it. My reply?

"GET THAT MOFO, DAMMIT!!"

I was obviously less concerned with using proper
English than I was about enjoying his new toy. :-)

I just thought y'all would like to read my impressions
of an M3. I think that would be a great long-distance
cruiser or maybe even a daily driver (a stiff clutch
doesn't really concern me all that much).

Thanks for the bandwidth!

I don't know how much it will affect it but yes I believe you're correct.
A strut brace on an E30 though is as effective as an x-brace on an E36 if
you
have the chance to compare both (at least it did on the butt dyno). I had
no
issues with the alignment thing as I was installing adjustable camber
plates
at the same time so that takes care of both issues and of course the Sparco
bar is open at the top so it's easy to reach all the bolts for the camber
plates,
other bars may block access.

Subject: [uuc] E36 engine transplant project

Gruppe,

I currently have a motor and 6-speed transmission from a 2002 E46 M3 sitting
in my garage and am trying to figure out which car I want to put it in.

I would really like to put it into an E36 M3/4 (Cheaper price and 4-doors
being the selling points). I have been looking around and doesnt look like
anybody else has done this transplant yet.

Ben Thongsai is helping me figure out the logistics of putting this project
together and together we are trying to figure out what we need to make this
project work.

The motor has the DME and everything but does not have the engine harness or
the instrument cluster. I priced out an instrument cluster (~ $450) which is
not bad, but looks like I need the piece of wiring that connects the
instrument cluster to the computer.

I have called a couple of used parts places to see if anybody has one, but
given the scarcity of M3s, it is not that easy.

I am looking for any advice on how to get this working. I still have not
bought a host car yet, so I am flexible on that front if I need to.

All helping input appreciated,

Vijay
