Just got a Brake Circuit Failure warning on the Check Control on a 94
325. Brakes appear to be working fine.

Can anybody tell me how bad this is or if there are any DIY checks?

Subject: [uuc] GOD, I love my wife

On a miserably humid day, I settle down on the couch with the Principessa
Charlize for our post-prandial nap. Max the Uber Dog is sprawled out at my
feet.

I wake up out of my stupor and realize that the Lovely Jamie (tm) has left
the house. A short while later, we hear the rumble as the 911 pulls into
the garage.

She comes back into the house with her nomex driving shoes on. Earlier
today, I asked her whether she wanted to go to New Hampshire International
Speedway next week for some track driving.

Where had she been this afternoon? Well, since she hasn't been behind the
wheel on the track since last year (what with the whole "really shouldn't be
drifting the car through the Essess at 140 mph when you're 7 months
pregnant" thing), and because she's been driving the B(aby) M(ax) W(agon)
with the Steptronic transmission as of late, she was a bit concerned about
her ability to heel-and-toe shift the 6-speed on the Porsche.

So she spent half-an hour driving the cloverleaf near our house, from Route
2 onto I-95 onto Route 2 onto I-95 onto Route 2, practicing her
downshifting....

God, I love my wife.

Don't worry, last week my check engine light came on. I opened the hood to
check my engine and it was still there. What next?

This typically means the brake light switch on the pedal is going bad.
It is a cheap, if uncomfortable, DIY job to replace the switch.
http://www.logun.org/brake.htm has a good write-up on the process.

Subject: Re: [uuc] How does one negotiate... (slightly OT)

My personal experience is with BMW Financial so it may not be applicable to
Audi. Just last year, my lease was up on the 540. The residual was much higher
on lease agreement than market value, that's a good thing for me. I tried two
or three times to negotiate with BMW Financial to buy the car directly from
them at lease end. They would not change one cent on the buyout cost. The
encouraged me to talk to my BMW retailer.

So I went to the dealer I leased my car from. The sales manager pulls up the
record from BMW Financial and printout all the terms of the lease and new
buyout cost. He give me a copy of the printout and told me to go home think
about it. Well, buyout cost for me has been discounted by $4500. I went home
and cranked out all the numbers for re-leasing as CPO or financing the car, it
worked out that I CPO the car for $1200 so I can get the 3.9% CPO finance rate.
Since it is CPO, I can get $500 rebate through BMW CCA rebate.

I did shop around with other dealers and see how much they would offer for
buyout. Some will only sell to me at the original lease buyout, others after
some probing will let me have it with the lower buyout. So dealership will have
different policies. CPO price is also different.

My car was in premium conditions. The only things dealer did to CPO the car is
Inspection I, which my car was almost due with one green light left, wipers,
and all new brake pads. I know the front brake pads had as least 1/2 life left
since I changed them not too long ago but the dealer still changed it out. This
was all included with the $1200 CPO. I often wonder if I had bald tires what
they would have done or charged me for a new set. They did skip detailing of
the car since I told them I don't like the way they detail cars.

My guess is the buyout cost change daily or weekly. Of course YMMV, especially
with Audi.

on the purchase of a lease return? A good friend of mine lease
an Audi A6
4.2 three years ago, and the lease expires in a month. It needs
probably
$1k worth of cosmetic work to return it. The residual value is
about $5k
above the wholesale value of the car.

Thus, theoretically, he could just pay the $1k, return the car,
then buy the
same car and save some money. Audi Leasing has to know this, so
I presume
that they should be willing to negotiat the buy-back price; they
can make a
few bucks more than if they had to wholesale it.

So, my question - is a negotiation of the lease-end purchase
price common?
If so, is it done with the dealer, or does he have to negotiate
with Audi
Leasing?

Any advice would be appreciated.

vty,

Subject: [uuc] Need to rent a BMW in Denver CO area

Gruppe:

I want to rent a BMW or other performance car in the Denver, Colorado area
between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2. The "best" deal I can find so far (the only
one, actually) is a Z3 for $199/day. Seems a bit high to me, but maybe I'm
just behind the times. Any suggestions for alternative sources? A roadster
would be nice but it's not a deal-breaker. I would even settle for a 330 if
available.

Good info, thanks!

Sounds like exactly what I want to do.

Was the dealership able to give you this new $4500 off number BEFORE
you turned your car in or did you have to turn it in first?

You are correct in that the rules for the lease turn in are very generous
VS the CPO rules. You only need a very little tread for a lease turn in, but
a lot more for a CPO car. In my case, I will not need new tires for lease
end, but I will for CPO. So if I can get a good buyout, then I will put
new tires on before turning the car in. That way I get what I want for a
TireRack prices.

Did you get a BMWCCA reward when you leased the car? The fine print says
you can't get more than one reward for the same VIN - if you got it when
new then no $500 at CPO. Since I am so dumb, I didn't join BMWCCA 1 year
before getting my car, so I missed the reward ($1000 at the time) but I
will be able claim it as CPO.

FWW, I had BMW financial give me a early lease termination buy out price a
few months back. Based on that I would say the car is/was discounted.
Comparing the buyout price VS end of lease buyout price there seemed to be
a lot of difference.
