Intake leak? Lots of little gaskets to crap out.

someone snuck into the garage at night & installed
cams in the engine ? or a small-block V8 ?

Scott:

It could be many things, but my idle was helped
greatly by cleaning the circular connector (20-pin?)
that is under the intake plenum. The injector
harnesses, coolant sensor, etc., are attached to the
ECU via that connector. Brett Anderson and Gary
Derian made me aware of this issue.

I am seeing a strange problem with my 1990 325is. My
idle is lumpy, but the RPMs remain steady. I've done
some head work, but I dont think its enough to make
the engine toss about like that. Reminds me of a
rumbly american V8. Any thoughts?

All m20 engines seem to rumble a little bit at idle. When I
readjusted the valves to the tight side of normal, the rumbling
increased.

Auberlen Is Highest Finishing BMW; TMS Adds Manufacturer's Championship To 2003
Season

Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA - 10/17/2003 - Heading into today's Round 9 of the
Speed Touring Car Championship, BMW needed a sixth place finish or higher to win
the Touring Car Manufacturer's Title for 2003. Bill Auberlen sealed the top spot
with a fourth-place finish. Will Turner retains third place in the Driver's
Championship.

Bill Auberlen had already clinched the Driver's Championship last month at
Laguna Seca. He started this race from the fourth position on the starting grid.
However, lapped traffic prevented a podium finish when Auberlen was running in
third place. Peter Cunningham was able to get by in the closing stages due to
the lapped car's position in front of Auberlen. He finished the race fourth out
of thirty-eight entries.

Will Turner started from eleventh but had moved up to ninth with the goal of
advancing further. A shunt after being nudged from the rear put Will Turner into
the wall on lap nine. He fell back in the pack to 30th but recovered and settled
in 21st. The five points he gained will keep him in third place heading into
next weekend's race in Puerto Rico.

"My race was going well for the first half. Then someone had contact with the
rear of my car, which spun me around, and I hit the wall at Turn 11. From then
on I just drove as hard as I could to get back as many positions and points as I
could," says Turner. "Turner Motorsport won the Championship for BMW this year
and I'm not counting myself out of second place in the Driver's title. We'll be
in Puerto Rico next weekend and I plan on being back on the front of the grid."

This round of the Speed Touring Car Championship will be broadcast on The Speed
Channel starting November 8 at 5pm.

The series will closeout the 2003 season next weekend in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Touring Car series has never raced in Puerto Rico and will be an exciting
event for Turner Motorsport customers and racing fans alike.

Subject: [uuc] I won!

I wanted the digest to be one of the first to know that a very nice man
at the BMWCCA told me today that I'm one of the raffle winners. It was
very exciting yesterday to come home to a phone message that said I
should call the national office today because of "a matter I need to
discuss with you." I didn't sleep well last night. As you may know
there are no actual cars that change hands, but a very nice check will
be heading my way. As always the tax men sure take a lot of the fun out
of the situation. I'm sure to be a celebrity at the saturday BMW
chapter meeting.

Buying my BMW and the joining club are truely one of the best things
that I've ever done
(and that was before today!).

Subject: [uuc] Cupped tires

My Dunlop Sport A2's, with less than 15000 miles on them, have become
terribly cupped, most notably along the inside edge.

I spoke with a Dunlop rep who is very familiar with the problem, but says
there must be something wrong with the car mechanically. Uhuh. Odd that such
an apparently common problem occurring with this tire is the fault of the
car.

Anyone familiar with this phenomenon? (of cupped tires, not b.s. customer
service rep's)

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably quiet H-rated street tire that will
last more than a summer and a half? I'm driving a '97 328ic, with
225/50/16's.

TIA

Roger

Thanks to all who responded!

Jason Knight for his contest suggestion; Robert Ellsworth for his helpful
dissertation; Dana Earl for his alacrity; Dave Nichols for his reassurance;
Kevin Kiely for his brevity; and David Chen for his clever subject header
(sexual torture device?). And Brett of course, as usual.

My logic is, I'm pretty much a mechanical chowderhead. But while I may be
insane and incompetant, I'm not stupid (really!). My fingers are crossed; I
*may* have installed the new filter in the 740 WITHOUT the central pipe
thingie, but I really WOULD NOT put the "sexual torture device" back onto
the shelf in my garage without, at the very least, thinking to myself,
"self, doesn't this piece belong somewhere?"

So... here's the follow-up question. Is it possible that the OEM filter
that I purchased from a BMW dealer an older filter that didn't need what
Brett cheerfully called the "condom" (what's with all the sex talk)? If so,
it would be logical that I would have saved the "condom" from the used
filter (I think).

Sigh. Bottom line, I guess I need to check the filter, huh? Any magic to
it? Should I warm up the car before doing it? If so, I need to let oil
drain from the filter, yes? Will it spill out?

Thanks in advance (as usual)....

vty,

It's the "environmentally friendly filter" conversion piece for early V8s.

The original V8 oil filter was a metal capped unit that slid over a narrow
aluminum post in the housing. The later version, from some time around
1995, is the plastic capped filter with a much larger hole in the centre.
In order to use the later filter in the early housing, one had to add this
"condom" to the aluminum tube in the centre of the housing.

If the car already has one, you don't need to replace it. It's a one time
install.

Subject: [uuc] Steptronic or not for 5-series year 2000

Apologies to the group for repeating this question. I searched the archives
but could not find the thread about why or why not to choose the Steptronic
transmission. In the thread, Brett had made a real nice summary comment.

Is there any reason to avoid the non-Steptronic transmission in a 2000
5-series?

Or conversly, why it would be better to have the Steptronic?

Thanks.
