Hi there,
I don't know if you can do this directly in KDE. I've always used 
XF86Config in /etx/X11 (or somewhere there about) to 
manage X.

Just open the file in your favourite editor, and search for:

Section "Screen"

and then:

Subsection "Display"

In that Subsection, you'l find something like:

Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

X, by default, loads in the first available mode (1024x768 in this 
example).
