Please note that the Debian project is using the PO(T) format. This means that you can use KBabel for this purpose as well. Furthermore it would be good to try/use the "Rough translation" option of KBabel in order to get those possible translations from KDE. I tried this once and the similarities are not that much and the concept totally different, but it should be tried.
