Looked in some 1941 QSTs. Found only a few manufactured and kit transmitters. HT6 & HT9, (scarce and weigh as much as a small planet), National HTX30, very scarce, and kits by Thordarson and Stancor. I've never seen either one. Home brew was the thing, though; almost every issue had at least one transmitter construction article. Old style parts probably easier to get than transmitter, unless you find an old homebrew one from an estate or something. Maybe give him a set of components for him to build?
