On the Facebook Progress Thru Processors wall: http://www.facebook.com/progressthruprocessors?v=wall&viewas=1014470106&ref=mf # Paul Tansey and David Hudson have asked why PTP needs to pull information from their Facebook profile. You will need to click on View all comments to see the replies.
In both cases a person with the original and personal name 'Progress Thru Processors' has provided an identical pro-forma response: > *All Facebook applications you “allow”, are able to access certain > information through Facebook’s API. You can control access to your personal > information through your Facebook privacy settings. Progress Thru Processors > is committed to respecting your privacy. Personal information provided to > Progress Thru Processors will be used only for your participation in the > projects you opt to support and the social and community features of > Progress Thru Processors.* > I am not sure how many of the PTP members whose first language is not English will understand this convoluted response. At the moment the CPDN database is down so I cannot check the content of recently created profiles. If when I check I find that PTP is by default creating CPDN profiles containing information clearly never intended for CPDN profiles I will not be pleased. Boinc has always been 'push' not 'pull'. In my view this is just as important with respect to any aspect of personal information, including usernames. No Boinc project should be using any item of personal information that was originally given for a different purpose unless the user actively permits its reuse.
