Hi all!
During the last few days, I've been looking at BOINC, what it does and
what projects there are to which you can contribute. I really have to
say that I think the idea and concept of it is really, really awesome!!!
I've got a Mac Pro here, with 8 2.26ghz processor cores (2 Intel Quad
Core Nehalem processors), and would really like to contribute all my
computer's processor power that I don't use to BOINC projects. I am
blind and use the screen reader that comes with Mac Os x (since 10.4
Tiger). This screen reader is called Voice over, and is really the
best computer screen reader I've ever seen!!! It can be activated on
any Mac using command-f5, or fn-command-f5 on a Mac Book.
Unfortunately, Voice over doesn't work with all applications that are
available for the Mac. This can be because of too many graphics,
unlabeled buttons and areas of the program, etc. Apple provides a lot
of documentation on application accessibility for registered
developers, and it shouldn't be a big problem to comply to them.
BOINC, unfortunately, is one of the few programs that won't work with
Voice over. Voice over will only say "unknown" in the whole program
window, and there seems to be no way to really use BOINC and set it
up. As with all great programs, I think there is probably a large
developer community behind BOINC. So, I am just wondering, would it be
possible to make changes to the GUI so it will work with Voice over?
There many other blind Mac users who would love to contribute to
BOINC, so optimicing it for accessibility would certainly pay off as
more users will be able to join BOINC projects. If this would somehow
be possible to achive, I'd most appreciate that! I can provide more
information on Mac accessibility and voice over if required, though I
unfortunately can't help making the actual application accessible due
to lack of programming skills. However, I'll be happy to test any
experimental BOINC builts to see if they work with Voice over.
Thanks to all of you for reading this, and have a great day!
Robin
