Do not make the mistake in assuming that the forum discussions about credit reflect the motives of the majority of the volunteers. There's something called the 90-9-1 rule, also known as "participation inequality", which says that most participants are merely lurkers. See http://www.useit.com/alertbox/participation_inequality.html And while it's hard to tell, becasue they are just lurkers, I'm guessing that the majority of the volunteers do it because they feel like they are making a useful contribution, and don't need to talk about the credits. So I don't think it's as dark as you think, but taking a break is also not necessarily a bad thing if you need it.
