I like Jorden's suggestion to 'keep it simple'. There was recently a lady on the Facebook website for Progress thru Processors who said: 'I could not make this application work and would like to get out of it completely.' When asked to explain what the problem had been she said she had no idea what to do and couldn't find a Help link.
There are Help links in the Advanced view. They send one to: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/BOINC_Help http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Advanced_view http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ They're all fine and extremely useful but the first two links are probably too complex and advanced for people like the Facebook lady. The third probably wouldn't help her. There's no link to a really simple page explaining that the way to get help from a person is to post on a project forum or the PtP forum or the boinc_dev forum or the Facebook PtP Discussion section. With information about how to find these forums. In the Simple view of 6.10.58 there's no Help link at all. Clicking on the square logos for one's projects gives a link to each project's website, but only in a few cases is there a link directly to a project's forum. The same can be said about the project buttons in the Commands panel of the Advanced view. I think the Simple view should carry a link to a really easy Boinc wiki help page which could also be added to the Advanced view help links. (The Boinc FAQs would serve this purpose admirably but I imagine that such a link is a no-no because it isn't official Boinc documentation.) It might also help if, just as more than one Command button is provided by default for the big projects that adopted Boinc early, like Einstein, Seti and CPDN, a forum link button could be also provided by default for every project. _______________________________________________ boinc_dev mailing list [email protected] http://lists.ssl.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/boinc_dev To unsubscribe, visit the above URL and (near bottom of page) enter your email address.
