I read that email thread; at the end Mark Kilgore says "yes, that's fine"
but I'm not sure if that's enough to qualify his code as open source.
Ramana: can you comment?

In any case, FreeType 2 would make a larger range of fonts available,
and would produce better-looking output.
I'd still like to switch to it.
