For anyone who might be in the same mess, I was able to recover most of my
code in mergeable form by using "svn diff" to generate patches against the
svn repository. "git diff" appeared to become unusable once I made the
mistake of trying a "git pull". I'm sure "git format-patch" will be
immediately obvious to me in a year, but it probably wouldn't have worked
if git diff wasn't working.
