As in my windows7 computer, the HD5550 has CAL and opencl and the integrated
HD3000 only has CAL. Since Collatz is the only project that runs successfully
on the HD3000 I have excluded it from
the HD5550 and have excluded all the opencl from the HD3000. Unfortunately the
exclusions don't always hold and it results in a lot of failed units due to
invalid device.

Charlie, you forgot about AMD GPUs that support CAL but can't support OpenCL.
Namely, HD2xxx, HD3xxx and their onboard analogues.
Situation with ATi differs from sitaution with NV where all CUDA enabled GPUs
are also OpenCL enabled ones. Old AMD/ATi GPUs support CAL but don't support
OpenCL.

that
is the case, and if the OpenCL application is faster, then it seems that there
should be no reason to have the CAL application at all.

So it also makes sense to have OpenCL but not CAL applications for Macs.
