Many programs doesn't find when looking for the xpm resource
quoting the mail from Rodrigo Silva
and all BOINC xpm files in client/res are invalid because they contain C (and
C++) license / copyright notice comments *before* the /* XPM */
header. So they don't thumbnail, no editor besides eog cannot open them, etc.
This is why in debian I accepted a patch for switching between xpm to png files

Don't know, the solution might be put the copyright at the bottom?
