Yes, I meant 'compatible' as in 'compatible with all the Linux clients which
might connect to your BOINC project'. If I want to use the sample apps to test
a BOINC server, I can't use the ones from the version of Debian/Ubuntu which
is running on my server, I have to build them myself (or get them from
somewhere else). (But of course probably I'd want to also build Windows,
OS X, Android etc versions anyway!)

Of course if you think that shipping the sample apps package is useful anyway
then that's great, I'm just trying to explain why Gianfranco's original patch
(probably?) isn't really a good idea for upstream, since David's original
explanation didn't seem to be understood.
