Also, I don't understand why the extra spacer should be needed. If anyone can find a bug in the layout code, or suggest a better solution, I would love to hear it. (This code was originally contributed by a third party volunteer many years ago, so no one here at Berkeley wrote the original code, though it has been updated a number of times.)
