Either, people upgrading earlier versions of BOINC don't notice the inherited
selection in the installer, or (as this time) people install new hardware in a
computer already running BOINC.

Could the mode line in the event log be enhanced to read something like

Running as a daemon (GPUs not available)

Running as a daemon (GPU computing disabled)

under Windows, please? The phrase "No usable GPUs found" does occur a few lines
later in the log, but there's nothing to associate the one as the cause of the
other. The restriction is mentioned in the installer and in
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing, but both of those are likely to be
far distant in time and space in the user's mind when they discover the problem.
