There was a group of Hungarian researchers that where doing something similar. They called it gears first and later it eveolved to GridBee I guess. The only thing I found: http://webcomputing.iit.bme.hu/ is rather old. There are some harsh limitations on what you can compute in a browser so not every project is suitable. In general you need to start something like a client instance that requests work from a project that supports such small workunits that can be computed in a browser.
