I don't see the need for an extra file that needs extra effort to be kept up to date when the translations are fine. I fixed the French and Portuguese translations in Transifex some weeks ago. This should be in the github repo, if it is not we should investigate why.
Right now we don't need the language names in the po files anymore, so we should remove them, but then someone needs to look out to add new languages to language_names.inc (and document that this needs to be done).
