Inter 0-1 Milan (match abandoned)
There was high drama at the San Siro as the Champions League 1/4 final
second leg was abandoned after Milan keeper Dida was struck by a flare.
Milan were leading 1-0 at the time (3-0 on aggregate) after Andriy
Shevchenko's sublime first-half goal, and have been declared provisional
winners by UEFA.
      FLARE NOT FLAIR

The trouble started after referee Markus Merk disallowed what appeared
to be an equalising header from Argentine Esteban Cambiasso in the 71st
minute.

As Milan keeper Dida prepared to take the resulting free-kick, a
number of flares started to rain down on the hapless Brazilian.

Dida was struck on his right shoulder and fell to the ground. As he
received treatment from paramedics, the players huddled in the centre circle
waiting for order to be restored.

Merk sensibly ordered a temporary halt in play and the players
returned to the dressing room.

However, when play resumed on 74 minutes and the flares continued to
rain down, the German had little choice but to order the players from the
pitch for good.

      SHEVA BAGS FOR MILAN

Andriy Shevchenko had scored with a sublime left-foot strike to give
Milan a first-half lead and all but wrap up the tie.

The game had started at a frantic pace, with Inter seemingly
determined to knock Ancelotti's classy outfit out of their stride.

As early as the fourth minute, Kily Gonzalez was booked for a thumping
late challenge on Brazilian maestro Kaka.

In fact, Merk was handing out cards faster than a Las Vegas croupier
by the time Pirlo curled a low free-kick around the Inter wall in the 12th
minute.

Juan Pablo Veron responded by forcing the first of a series of
excellent saves from Milan goalkeeper Dida, the Brazilian tipping the
Argentine's rasping drive around his right-hand post.

On the half hour mark, Andriy Shevchenko virtually secured the Serie A
champions' progression to the semi-finals.

The Ukrainian picked up the ball just outside the area on the right
side of the field, before advancing a couple of paces and producing a
swerving left-footed drive that flew past the despairing Toldo and into the
left-side netting of the goal.

Needing four goals to win, Inter set about their comeback attempt with
renewed vigour.

Kily forced yet another fine save from Dida with a rising drive from
distance, but burly Brazilian striker Adriano could only show fleeting
glimpses of the form that lit up the Italian league in the early part of the
season.

In fact, it was only after the Brazilian limped off in the 50th
minute, to be replaced by Nigerian Obafemi Martins, that Inter really looked
capable of drawing level.

Within a minute of coming on, Martins latched onto a clever backheel
from Javier Zanetti, outpaced Nesta, and struck powerfully with his right
foot.

Dida earnt his salt yet again by tipping the shot onto his near post.

      DESCENT INTO CHAOS

With the tension steadily rising, Cambiasso headed in from a corner to
give the Inter fans a ray of hope.

It was shortlived. Cambiasso reacted furiously to Merk's assessment
that he had fouled en route to heading the ball home, and the Argentine was
booked for his troubles.

Then, in a fit of 70s disco fever, the flares came out. It was a sorry
end to the evening, but Milan should find themselves safely through to a
semi-final date with either PSV or Lyon, pending an investigation into the
incident.

A UEFA spokesman said: "The referee and the match delegate have
provisionally declared the result a 1-0 win to Milan. However, that is
provisional. The matter will be decided by the Control and Disciplinary body
of UEFA in due course."
